The coach of South African athlete Caster Semenya, the 800m world champion, has resigned amid an ongoing investigation into her gender.

Ms Semenya, 18, was told to take gender tests after winning gold at the World Championships in Berlin.

Wilfred Daniels said he was leaving as coach as Athletics South Africa (ASA) did not advise Ms Semenya properly.

He said he was sorry for not protecting her from all the media attention, which ASA should have predicted.

"I'm so sorry for the part I played; because of my negligence she went through all that," he said, South Africa's Star newspaper reports.

The controversy over Ms Semenya's gender has angered many in South Africa, including her family who insist she is female.

'Gender test trick'

Mr Daniels said a month before the World Championships in Berlin, ASA knew about the IAAF's concerns about Ms Semenya after she won a gold medal at the African Junior Championships in Mauritius.

Given this knowledge, he said, ASA should have done more to help her deal with the questions over her gender after she won gold at the World Championships in Berlin.

He said that in July the ASA complied with the IAAF and gave Ms Semenya a gender test.

He said she was tricked into taking what she believed were standard drug tests.

"She was asked to go to a clinic in Pretoria to undergo some of these tests but the tests were not explained properly. According to the source I spoke to, it was actually some kind of gender verification test," he told South Africa's Talk Radio 702.

But ASA has always denied it had a hand in any gender verification tests.

The results are still not known and following her performance in Berlin, the athlete has been told to undergo further tests.

Mr Daniels has personally apologised to Ms Semenya for how the matter was handled.

"I had to leave. I just looked at myself and asked if I liked what I saw," he said.

"I asked if I could really enjoy my life knowing what I know... My conscience was too great.

"I am not happy. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody because I am part of the collective responsibility and blame."

evidently he doesn't want to take the fall for the oncoming **** storm so he does the walk out option with reason abc.

When you say "Evidently", I think you mean "Without any evidence at all, and the following is my own opinion completely..."

I see what the coach is doing as honourable. Recognising the part (however big or small) that he played in this humiliating ordeal and giving up his title as a result, is just about as much as one could ask of him.

Ordinarily I'd call it honourable however, I think he's playing martyr, and wants to jump ship just in case the pooh hits the proverbial, call me a cynic...

Pretoria – Caster Semenya, the women's 800m world champion, didn't even have the money to visit her mother in Limpopo as Athletics South Africa (ASA) had not yet paid its contracted athletes.

This coming from sports24?

In other news,
Apparently Caster was meant to appear on Oprah, but that fell through because ASA wanted payment for the appearance. Maybe someone should point out what Oprah is to these buffons:(. Chuene is the baboon his name suggests

Foresight missing there. Talk about being penny wise...

interesting how the coach just resigned before the results are to be out this week somewhere, but it is all wait and see ;)

AFAIK, she passed tests conducted by ASA on request from IAAF before the media hype. Reasons for the resignation might have nothing to do with the results but with the way ASA (including the coach) handled the matter.

(Unless the coach is a good spin doctor...)

I heard the test will take two weeks and if she is found to be a man she will keep her medal. WTF is up with that will they give Marion Jones her medals back too??
Will try and find the link.

The IAAF has since said Semenya could keep her medal even if she is scientifically shown not to be all-woman.

But that appears too little, too late.

And the NSRC has called on world sport's chiefs to go further and help promote better understanding of complex gender issues by officially recognising athletes who may differ slightly from the majority.

"Gender is not a science, and biology does not make -- or unmake -- a woman," added the statement.

"Oppression based on looks, however, is real, and forces women athletes to adhere to a sexist standard that does not foster true competition or personal excellence.

"We applaud Caster Semenya's skill as an athlete, and the way she creates more space for women -- of all shapes, sizes and looks -- to succeed.

"We demand that you stop selective gender testing now, and put in place new policies that support all athletes, regardless of gender expression or identity."[/QUOTE]
So guys Start growing your hair and wear a bit of lipstick and join the Olympic team a s a woman!!

I'm going to pee my pants if we get banned from competing in international sports....again:D:D

What pisses me of is when Oscar wanted to run in the normal olympics they said no because that will promote the idea that if you cut of your calves you can run faster on blades. But now they say that if you are a man that looks like a woman you can enter as a woman?
So can "normal" woman now pump themselves full of testosterone and say it's a medical condition? If not, wouldthat not discriminate?

Are you implying she's a man? Even before official results come out?

Oscar was granted permission to compete, but it was already too late for him to start training for the event. I fail to see any relevance to Caster's situation.

Err, I'm not sure that Pistorius was granted permission to compete- but he has failed to run the qualification times, in any case.

Mila, how about we wait for the results of the test before making assumptions about Semenya's gender?

I agree and i do have friends that looks like men but are woman. I was the first to defend her, We can not all look like Heidi.
But they are just covering their asses to much??? If they were so sure she was a girl they would have send the test and laughed it off?

The lady does protest to much?

This decision was reversed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on 16 May 2008, the Court ruling that the IAAF had not provided sufficient evidence to prove that Pistorius's prostheses give him an advantage over able-bodied athletes.

Although eligible to compete in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, Pistorius did not qualify for the South African team.- source: Wiki
