I only recently discovered the Semi-Shaped service from Axxess. So, I signed up for an Semi-Shaped account and discontinued my Shaped account @ Axxess. Now, i wanted to check a difference in performance, as i noticed that the Shaped line is run by Saix, and the Semi-shaped is run by IS.

Now, Semi-Shaped works as follows:
Shaped access during peak hours (07:00 - 17:00 weekdays). Rest of the time, it runs unshaped.

I did a test between 08:20 and 08:30, so this is Shaped Saix vs Semi-Shaped IS (on Shaped time).

AoC ping is Age of Conan ping as reported by the game itself.
So i was quite impressed with the results, considering they were both shaped.
I'm going to try tonight when the Unshaped Mode is on. I hope the results are even better :D

What kind of results are you guys getting? Are you also seeing this difference in ping between IS and SAIX

Nice comparison - thanks for posting. I've been considering getting a "semi-shaped" account myself.

Would you be able to do a speed test (e.g. www.speedtest.net) using each of your accounts on a JHB (or CPT) mirror and maybe an international server as well? That would be a great way to supplement your latency test with a bandwidth test.

Cool, Good Idea, I'll do that tonight when i do the Unshaped Test. Thanks for the input ":D

I also bought 1GB axxess IS semi for gaming a week or 2 ago, but after initially being excited because of pings similar to those above, I now find actual gaming does not work so well ... it is as if there the game runs in fits and starts.

Granted it is a FPS (Red Orchestra), an unshaped account has none of this. Perhaps others have had different experiences with a FPS?

I also checked semi-shaped last week from Axxess, dont have ADSL currently. I cancelled my WISP account today, so I want to get ADSL. This is sad to see, because I had intended to use it for international gaming (Command & Conquer 3, Guild Wars , etc). I think for CSS and local server a general shaped account would be the same? at least that what I have been told....

I have been playing international games online for a while now, and the adsl seems fine. I played WOW alot with a 300-600 latency, and was doing 40 man raids with Teamspeak, and it worked great! Also played a few RTSes and currently playing Trackmania, GRiD and Age of Conan. They all play well. Obviously not as well as it would over lan, but its not really that bad that it'll hinder your "pwnage skillz". I did play QuakeWars and Team Fortress 2, but the lag on international servers was just too high to actually get kills. Luckily we have local servers for those :D

I'm not sure about the local shaped/unshaped, but it makes sense that it would not make a difference here. And i suppose that the ping is so low, you probably would not even notice a difference if shaped/unshaped did take effect. Probably change the ping from 70 to 80 or something. That's my GUESS, I dont really know much about that :(

I suggest you guys get it with openweb cause they give you exstra local. Axxess doesn't give any local and its much more cheaper!

Openweb : 1GB + 1GB local = R65
Axxess : 1GB = R79

These accounts are clones. They are exactly the same. Just you get extra local with the openweb accounts as a small bonus. Buy this account at openweb if you want the IS fuber semi unshapped option. Much more value for money if you ask me.

I also seem to have some anomalies with my Axxess Semi-Shaped for which I logged a call with their suppor this morning.

Durnig the weeknights I have been getting pings to teh EVE-Online server on my Semi-Shaped of 210ms average. This morning its jumped to 330ms average?!? So I am not so sure IS has setup their timetables correctly to remove the shaping on weekends?

My Axxess Unshaped account yields pings to the same server of average 190ms so the SAIX account is 20ms faster than the Semi-Shaped IS account when in Unshaped time periods.

My 2c...

PS ... Not happy with the pings this morning...

Axxess have come back to me and are investigating this with IS, they say it should be resolved in the coming week.

iviarki, you've left us hanging, buddy. Come on now, stick to your commitment :D
I Have Failed!

I actually had something come up this weekend and was unable to test the ping. I did check quickly last night and the ping seems to be the same, maybe lower by 40.

So i'll have to side with ravetoad on this and mention that their timetables may be a bit off, considering i'm getting the same ping on weekends as weekday peak hours.

But, my 2c, i'm happy with 300ping, hehe!

But it is the bandwidth comparison that we are after... You've already given us the latency comparison ;)
