Hi

My Girlfriend uses my MWEB ADSL account to send and receive gmail through outlook.

Untill recently it worked using outbound server smtp.gmail.com on port 465 as per gmail settings.

However recently all outgoing mail even smtp.mweb.co.za is intercepted by SAIX's smtp server and they block or forbid a gmail account as the sending account.

If anybody has seen this or worked through it please help.

Thanks

hi Szb ,

I normally don't answer post that do not refer to hardware that we supply, but since I have personaly been down this road, and its a simple but not obvious answer, I will share it with you. Obviously, you may be having other issues, but what worked for me was the following :

I was performing the same pop access to my gmail, and it was working well for quite a while until it suddenly stopped. after some investigating , it seems that Google is having legal issues with the use of the name "Gmail" ... this is why all new accounts are now @Googlemail.com ... this does not yet affect old account names, although you will find that your girlfriends account will work both @gmail.com and @googlemail.com for the moment....

Where this does affect Pop3 access, is that they changed the name of the pop3 server, without warning : it was pop.gmail.com and now has been changed to pop.googlemail.com ... i dont recall, but i think that i had to make the same change to the SMTP server settings aswell. after mine stoped working, I realised this, made the change and suddendly things started to work again. It would have been nice if they had let us all know, but they did not.

hope that this helps you ,

Thanks but this is the smtp server and it seems that saix is almost a proxy and even if you telnet a prefered smtp server smtp.saix.net opens

Would have been nice indeed if they sent out some sort of warning

I'm still using pop.gmail.com without any probelms (port 995), I'm also sending via smtp.gmail.com without any problems (port 25).

"This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)" it ticked on both incoming and out going [under More Settings - Advanced]

Also under More Settings - Outgoing Server, "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" is ticked and set to use the same settings as incoming mail server.

Google has not changed pop.gmail.com to pop.googlemail.com, I haven't heard anything about legalities and would assume that it's merely to increase the number of unique email addresses they can host.

I've just checked my settings and they are pop.gmail.com (port 995) and smtp.gmail.com (port 465) and is working fine.

They are having legal issues, but only in certain countries, Germany was one IIRC.

No I think I can help.

Log onto gmail's website and sign in with her account. Go to settings at top right. Then click on Forwarding and POP.

In there somewhere are instructions for how to setup gmail. If you have been there before you will notice the pages have changed somewhat..I noticed this last night.

After selecting Outlook Xpress for XP (if thats your OS and client), you will notice they have a file to download and run. It automatically sets up your gmail for Outlook. Not sure what it changes exactly...but after that it works hundreds :D
