What I don't understand is why do recruiters always keep the company confidential? I always ask where is the position and who is the company to which I always get the reply it's confidential. I always have to lie and say I'm interested and then they divulge the details and only then do I truly make a decision. Same thing with salary.

Honestly all this nonsense is just to make recruiters feel they are important and that their jobs are valid/add value. Companies used to post their name, location and salary in newspapers for years and they managed to hire people just fine.

Just think - the the equivalent of what recruiters do now is posting jobs in newspapers saying "looking for C# ninja dev, all details confidential, call xxx xxx xxxx". Would you call for the job when there is no salary advertised, no company name etc? Recruiters get so much flak because you **** everyone around. Sometimes I almost feel bad when I see people putting you guys down here, but then I remember that you guys try your level best to hide as much info as possible and make it a laborious task just to apply for a job. I actually find it less painful and more successful to look for and apply for jobs by myself than to use recruiters.

They do this to prevent you, the candidate, from dealing direct with the prospective employer and thereby depriving them of their commission. Probably as simple as that.

I do however, agree it is pointless, because there is nothing wrong with the company saying to direct applicants "we deal with so-and-so recruiter, please apply there" like they do overseas.

I do however, believe it is necessary to stop this secrecy. I need to be able to do a background check on people, to see whom I am working for. We don't want to end up working for Dolby's current employer do we?

Kind of defeats the purpose because they have to tell me who it is before I give permission to submit my CV. At this point I could go to the company directly myself so they not really protecting themselves.

Indeed, and I see your point.
Overseas, I applied for some jobs. Either they have a portal on their website that plugs into their chosen recruiter's website, or they have a liasion onsite that is actually employed by their chosen recruiter. From the word go you know whom you are dealing with.

Oh and yes, it does defeat the purpose, I suppose we could argue that its a type of filtering system. Who knows. Maybe the OP can enlighten us.

Believe me, or don't, I do wish that we were able to put the clients details on our adverts. Some companies just don't allow you too. We are in discussions with our client regarding this and have stipulated the advantages or having their brand "out there".

Then you have your big corporates who deal with so many suppliers and have no issue in allowing you to use their name on adverts. Not many of those in South Africa unfortunately.

Good, I am impressed....

If the company is interested in assisting with me moving to CPT (by assistance, I don't mean a relocation package, I mean, just basic help with getting down there and advice about schooling etc and to find reasonable digs) I would apply and I would be willing to relocate should it be a successful application. I have quite a bit of experience with C#, especially since I roll my own apps at home for my own purposes.
