Sennheiser HD 598

Bought my HD555's second-hand here on MyBB just a few days ago for R800.

Did the 595 mod and was still a little bit disappointed at first.... until I bypassed my ****ty P8P67 M/B onboard soundcard tonight via optical to a Sony Amp.
So you're the so and so who grabbed that bargain!

Anyway, hold on to your crotch until you've given a pair of 650's a listen

Bunch of guys at Carbonite forums were getting together to do a Sennheiser import.

so how was it? I emailed them and the usps shipping would be 50$ imean that is a 5th of the price of the hd598's, then import and everything and it gets very close to what i can get it here.

That is why you buy in a group and split the shipping. They also give you a $50 Visa voucher that you can use so the shipping is practically free

Out of experience,

Back in 2004 I bought a pair of HD 595 series head phones from sennheiser. Back then they were about R3500.00 And I'm still using them today :) You can't go wrong when paying quality for these head phones. If you really look well after them they should last you for ever!

PS: mine is almost 8 years old! :D

Are they worth the insane amount of money? I really want to get some properly decent headphones, but they don't come cheap. I've been using the Razer Carcharias recently, very comfortable, looks nice and well built, but an utter piece of shyte sound-quality wise. The old, much cheaper Sennheiser HD 202 beats them by a mile. (Actually I shouldn't say that, I might want to sell them later.) :o

So, the HD 598. All the reviews say the sound quality is excellent, and I know they look stunning, like they were made from Rolls-Royce parts. I mean look at it:

So, is it actually worth the price of a complete mid-range hi-fi, and can I use them properly without an amp by directly plugging them into my Xonar DX? They're 50 Ohm, which the card should easily be able to handle...

I bought the HD 485 some time ago which I enjoy to this day :)
Wonder how they compare to the 598!
Thanks

The only way to know for sure is to compare them side by side, from the same, high quality source, with a very good recording. But generally with Sennheiser, each series you go up is a massive step up in performance. One day when I win the lotto, I'll get the big daddy HD800. There's just no other way to justify R12k for some headphones.

I can tell you though, that as some other poster mentioned, the 598 is like wearing sex on your head.

Thanks T299.
Now to find a store that has one on demo!
Perhaps you know of a store that will have one on display.

Incidentally I have in the past owned valve EAR amps and still have Magneplanar Speakers and my Linn Sondek from many years back. So I do prefer an open sound without being harsh, and bass without being bosomy.
Left that typo in since we were talking about 'wearing sex on the head' anyway :)

HD650's imported can be had for the same price as HD598's locally. I upgraded from HD595's which are virtually HD598's, what a difference!

Only go HD5xx (50Ohm) if you don't have amplification, or don't intend getting.

Bull****. Please inform us all how to get a 650 here for R2800 or be known as a big fat liar. Links or it didn't happen.

Edit: Also, the impedance alone isn't a good indicator of whether you need an amp or not. Even some IEM's apparently benefit a lot from amplification, such as the Sennheiser IE8 (16Ohm) or many of the Shure models at 16-20Ohm. I'd say if you have any headphones above the level of "gaming" crap, you need a good sound card or external amp/DAC.

Niteowl: Sorry, don't know of anywhere that will let you try one, ufortunately that seems to be rare. we normally borrow someone else's..

Okay I paid R3,200 + R200 shipping + R150 customs.

Even that is a pretty good price. But it's still quite a bit more than the 598. Where did you get it from?

Yeah 598's aren't worth it if you already have amplification or intend getting it etc. Razordogdeals.

Every audio site and/or person ever disagrees with you. Like I said in post 33, any good headphone benefits from an amp. Some of the more expensive ones just need it to sound any good, or to work at all, like the Hifiman HE-500 or Audeze LCD-2. (Impedance 38 and 60Ω by the way). Take a 595/598 and plug it into a cellphone, laptop, iThing, etc, then plug it into a headphone amp and listen to the same music. I dare you to tell me there's no difference.

Also, thanks, I know about razor, but their price for the 650 is $499.95, without shipping or taxes, so that's already over R4000.

Someone did you a huge favour. Items at that price should incur at least R500 at customs, and at $500 for HD 650s, you're currently looking at over R4500 if you import:

R3820 + R200 + R618 = R4638 (assuming normal tax and no extra duty)

Relax dude. 598's aren't worth it when 650's can be had for around R500 more, is what I meant. I.e. they are not worth the amount of money. Does not warrant amp discussion. But see next point.

Oh right, it appears their special prices are over. Lucky I bought just in time!

HD 650 Subtotal : $359.00 USD
Tax : $0.00 USD
Shipping : $49.50 USD
Total : $408.50 USD

Been really lucky, I picked up my 595's for R1,800 a year ago! Still holding onto them. ;)

Doubt the 598's are much better.

I emailed them, and they marked the value as $100 IIRC. I paid about R158 tax.
