Hi Guys

Went looking for headphones over the weekend at Audio/Video Shop and the salesperson said they stock 2 Sennheiser
models, the 202 and the 509. Price on the 202 was about R400,00 and the 509's R1200,00. Also told me that 509's are old stock and has been replaced by the 508's, but that the 509's are very good quality.

I decided to go home and do research on the net before I buy, but the problem is I cant find any Sennheiser 509 headphones anywhere on the net.

Any help on if they exist or what he ment?

The 202's are awesome. They may start to feel a little uncomfortable after a few hours but you can't beat them for sound quality. I've had two pairs over the last 7 years (used every day at work), and have just got my third. I've also owned a pair of the more expense 205's and they didn't even compare to the 202's.

The 202's are very good for the price (I got mine for about R250). Even for more than that they are still pretty much best in the price range. Just bear in mind that as people here said, they are over-ear headphones so they do hurt your ears after a while. But at the end of the day they are still budget headphones.

If you want something really decent look at Sennheiser's mid- to higher-end stuff. I find the open earphones sound very nice, as well as being very comfortable. The HD 555's should be about R1500 and they make the 202's sound like crap though. The 555 and 558 are similar, with the 558 being the replacement. Higher up is the 595 and new 598.

I recently decided to get the HD598's. Expensive, but the sound is [Unreal Tournament Voice] GODLIKE!! [/UT Voice]. It's hard to explain really until you've heard them. The difference between the 555/558 and 595/598 isn't as big, but it is there, so you can decide if it's worth the extra money. For me it definitely was, but then I also hear a massive difference between my Xonar U3 dongle and my Xonar DX sound card, which some people say sound very similar so maybe I'm a closet audiophile :D . If you're looking for the best value it's probably the HD 555. And they get better after a few days of use (burned in). I'd just recommend using any good earphones with a good source (ie not built-in crappy motherboard sound). The Xonar DG soundcard for example is only like R300.

Here's my original thread (which I haven't updated since buying unfortunately) : http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/372210-Sennheiser-HD-598?highlight= look especially at post #6, that says it all.

Edit again: There's no such thing as HD 508 or 509's on the website, or even on Google, so maybe the sales people are a bit clueless... :wrf:

Many of the guys in the office has Sennheiser HD 202 headphones and they love them. Affordable and good quality sound.

You can't go wrong with most any set of sennies, tbh.

If this is what you are looking at, I can recommend it.
Had mine for yonks now and wear them 5 days a week and at least 5 hours a day.
Good sound and personally I find them comfortable.

Got a pair of 518s to replace my old 515s. Sure beats the cheap stuff by far. Love how the 518s do bass, they seem to sound better than my 515s did.

Sennheiser earphones kick the lama's ass!

I've got the HD437 for use with my pc....absolutely superb! Running HDMI from pc to my Samsung HD display, which has a line-out jack. The sound quality is brilliant, but HDMI is pretty much the best you can get. ;)

The HD437 and HD202 are very similar, if I'm not mistaken. HD437 has softer "ear cups". Comfy for long hours.

Paid R449 for mine.

Edit : Ah, here's the review of the two : http://www.cameratim.com/reviews/audio/sennheiser-headphones/

I've had my HD202's for about three years. They are not particularly uncomfortable, but most over-the-ear headphones are more comfortable. The sound is great, especially for the price. I bought mine for R370.

Also have the HD202s, plugged into a retro Pioneer amp, they are awesome.
BTW I also use mine in a call center environment and wear them for up to 7 hours at a time with no issues.

What everyone else said.

I've had HD 495, HD 570, now HD598.

Each one has been amazing. will never go to a lower quality headphone ever again

I have a pair of HD418s. Bought them in May. The sound quality is amazing, expected it to be super loud but it wasn't.. Though the bass quality is the best out of any of the headphones I have owned in the past.they are really comfortable as well

They're only supposed to be R10k. Still, that's pocket change to some people. If you want a real shock, check out the Sennheiser HE 90 (Orpheus).

14 000. Dollars. American.

Yeah but most of the time "average person" headphones over about R2-3K are mostly for people who listen to classical music.

I had a pair of HD 465's that got stolen. They worked brilliantly. They're damn big though.
I now have Bose on-ears, damn expensive, and not exactly that much better than the Sennheisers, I do blame on-board souncards though since I know for a fact that these things sound 10X better on a decent amp.

I still love Sennheiser.
Had a pair of 202's that worked great, but one of the cables died. My advice: If you use headphones frequently but don't want to get raped price wise, stick to Sennheiser but budget for anything between R800 - R1500. Ergonomics also plays a huge role when you're using them for hours each day at work, so see if you can try them on (be extremely anal while doing so since even the slightest of of pressure or discomfort will drive you mad after a long time). Honestly, 202's can become very painful after long hours if you have massive ears like I do.
