As I am sure you all know, I ditched Sentech and moved to iBurst. A friend of mine stuck with Sentech because they haven't yet phoned about changing him to a new contract.

I'm using his wireless network here, and I can honestly say that it seems that his internet connection at an alleged 256kbps is pretty much the same speed as my iBurst capped connection at 64kbps.

Sentech Pretoria was also off for quite a number of hours yesterday evening.

Go Sentech!

You guys in getagun must have a different sentech up there as down here in durbs the 256k package has always been pretty good, except maybe midday during the week :)

the 256k package has always been pretty good

About 90% of all Sentech's customers hate them, and the other 10% probably don't care. They don't understand the concept of "a happy client is a loyal client". There have been reports of speeds as low as 32kb/s in certain areas. Those areas were supposed to be in the MyWi coverage area. I'll give these guys 2 more years, altough they'll probably go bankrupt before that time.

I would get sometimes 200kbps on multithreaded downloads, but websurfing and remote desktop to servers at work over VPN truly sucked. On ADSL, surfing is much faster, remote desktop works like I'm on the LAN at work, and I get 320kpbs downloads.

You should cancel your Sentech supscription and get IBurst. They offer better latency, wider coverage, MUCH better speeds, and much better service.

Sentech is a state-funded organisation. i doubt very much that sentech will go bankrupt. If anything, they might just discontiue their internet service completely

I've always been happy with Sentech. Speeds were great on the 256k package. Hardly any downtime. Love the 20 gig "cap". BUT. This crap about we will cut you off if you don't move to a different service was the last straw. I don't want to wake up on the 1st of Nov with no internet service, so we made another plan.
It will be shocking if they just do cut people off without even so much as an email, but at the end of the day it seems they can do what they like.

As people have said, they're state-funded so who needs to offer good service when if things don't work out you can just be bailed out indirectly by your ex-customers through their taxes.

Update - torrent on capped iBurst downloading at around 15 to 20kb/s.

Usually sits around 6 or 7 when capped... I think there may be local iBurst peers?

Just to confirm on the title "Sentech 256kbps is the same speed as capped iBurst 64kbps" I've been capped on the 64k now for the last few days but downloading a torrent at 2 - 5kB/s which is what I used to get with sentech 256k and I'm streaming audio at the same time and browsing around here - so there :p

dslreports.com speed test 2006-10-25 16:47:19 EST:
61 / 153 (Kbps)
(7.4 / 18.6 KB/sec)

There is one.. but you have to be super l337 to get in. and I think you have to be gay too.. something like that.

LOL @ EHV. If you are referring to the one where you have to supply like 5gb or 10gb and crap like that, AFAIK that is the hub

I'm not quite sure what the server is or the link... i'll try and find out... my friend was telling me about it a few weekends ago

it would be nice if this server works. local downloads are always better and more reliable, although ill have to wait for my new pc to arrive before i can even think about downloads.

No no, of course I know about the hub. i'm talking about local torrents sites that record your upload speeds and if they arent good enough they kick you off the server and stuff like that. You also arent allowed to talk about them in public or you get banned etc.. like I said, hoogs homosexual stuff.
