Sentech seeks R300m upgrade

Marumo said Sentech has connected 1 100 schools in Gauteng through the MyWireless network, and those schools have already been given the e-rate – the 50% connectivity discount legislated by government.
Is this a fact? Surely someone on this forum would know.....anyone?

The MyWireless network is stable and has more than 4 000 commercial subscribers, he added
Including the schools? If so, that isn't so good, there were over 3000 subscribers in June 2004! :D

Telkomonopoly TV over DSL versus Sentech Digital TV Broadcasting...

If it's true (I don't think that Sentech would risk asking for R300mil whilst lying to the PPCoC, altho anything is possible) then it's good news - any connectivity for schools is good & especially good if they're already getting the 50% gazetted discount.

I was going to say don't you mean 2004 - then you edited it b4 I hit the quote button.

Now that I've arf'd :D the other channels, back to the the programme we were talking about, I cannot help wondering if Sentech suddenly caught a wakeup after Telkomonopoly started talking about the MNET over DSL thing - that surely has the potential to kick Sentech in the nuts - doesn't it?

Well in theory, I 'spose...but in reality you'd be paying R3500 a month for DSTV, and your cap would kick-in in the middle of the World Cup final. :(

Actually Sentech has been trying to find funds for this for quite some time. I seem to remember that the begging bowl was much bigger last year (around 2 Billlion?) ...I think Sentech have found some cash from a bank, but it is conditional on Govt support to some degree.

BTW

DVB-H stands for Digital Vido Broadcasting - Handhelds. Google doesn't have too much info on this. Would love to be able to pick up the testing signal though!

Cheers

You'd probably have to have a MyWireless Modem :(

DVB-H is a mobile technology, ie you'll need a mobile that supports it to be able to pick up the signal. I think Japan or neighbours use it already (?).

Arf9999, you make a good point re: R3500 for DSTV as well as the cap kicking in. Does BBC count under international bandwidth when watched? And if Helkom implement the 10gb local cap, how will they distinguish TV data from regular data, as its all travelling in packets. And if they decide to sniff these packets to figuire out whats in them, doesn't that count as invasion of privacy, violating our rights?!

The statement is incorrect as the 1100 schools were connected with VSat and not MW.
Almost all of these schools are in outlying area's where there is no means of internet at all let alone MW :)

Thx ProAsm,

Makes more sense now... 1100 schools each with a VSAT connection...pretty impressive! But even with 50% discount...very expensive.

For those schools coverd by MW, is Sentech going to do the same thing with MW? Should be cheaper...but then again Sentech doesn't cover less affluent areas :(
