Sentech Site Updated!

In reply to Chopsky. Look i'm no friend of Telscum. but the maths works whichever way your need is (business or personal or both). Helscum has capped 'speed' of download, not how much you can download as I understand it. It's not as if you are suddenly cut off, but you are shunted to a slower service after the 3 cap which is just as despicable as Sentech's approach to forcing you to buy their modem (I wander if that is strictly speaking legal??). If one's need is for a cheap permanent connection, and unlimited content (surfing/researching content) irrespective of speed then Helscum is cheaper, but not necessarily better. Sentech has essentially pulled a fast one (excuse the pun) with an outdated business model that is very reminisent of their government roots (their business culture is still GOVERNMENT with all it's excuses to suck money out of customers by hook or by crook). So if speed for say gaming is your need then I guess the overpriced limitless downloads at speeds better than Telcom is good for that!!

We will know if Sentech's "MyWireless" is competitive when we see a significant price drop by Telkom on leased line and adsl costs.

If we see no reaction from Telkom by end February next year then we should know that Telkom is not concerned by Sentech's offering and we can assume collusion, much as in the cell-phone industry.

While the rest of the world moves on to 1,5Mbps Sentech is trying to lure us into the 128Kbps connection.

Some are predicting an internet boom - bull****, this will not happen.

We will get an internet boom when the following happens:

a. R100.00 per month fixed cost for all national phone calls.

b. R300.00 per month for unlimited, uncrippled REAL 256/512K broadband.

c. Total deregulation of the Sentech and Telkom monopolies.

We should not compare Sentech with Telkom -
we should compare anything we are offered with international trends -

we deserve it -

all our people deserve it and it is only greed
and I suspect a lot more which is preventing us from joining the rest of the world.

Of course I realise that I am living in a 3rd world country where having a really affordable broadband line into your house is only but a pipe dream, but that gives me no reason not to voice my opinion on the current state of affairs of the price of internet access here in SA. The price, amongst other issues, of ADSL for a start was one of the reasons why myadsl.co.za was launched in the first place.

If you can justify that you'll save big bucks in paying R645 per month for 128k (not taking into account that your net habits will change when you get permanent access), then this solution is right for you. For myself, 128k isn't enough for my needs and paying R1.4k for 512k is way too much for me (and I earn an average salary)

If no one at least gives the service a chance before they voice their malinformed oppinions, then it will never get cheaper due to lack of end user interest.

As I understand it, if 50 users are not using the pipe, then wont your speed increase? Like in the other topic (not sure) where ProASM told us that

A clear conscience is a sign of bad memory!
A 24-month contract is really unheard of! Especially for a company this new to us, trying something new as well. I would be far too scared to invest the next 2 years of my internet use into such a brand new venture.

That's my opinion anyways

Um, when cellphones were introduced they had 24 month contracts.
*edit* They still do.

Well that is correct as the site says you can peak upto 3MBps, well worth the R700 IMHO.

Still, I would want to wait about 6 months or so to hear how the service is before switching from telkom to sentech. Sentech's offering is far nicer than telkom's...dont get me wrong. But it's not good enough for me to want to automatically invest the next 24 months of my usage into them.

When cellphones were introduced, there evidently was no alternative mobile telephony service, so people bought the 24month contracts as they had no other options. Now over time, they are still able to offer these lenghty contracts as people have had time to get used to Vodacom & MTN(Im not too sure about Cell-C's offerings).
We still have the option of using Telkom's ADSL however. Way I see it...a 12 month contract (instead) would win over many more INITIAL users.

YOU HAVE SUCH A GOOD IDEA!!!

I'VE GOT IT NOW

We all sit at home and wait 6months for *some* "sucker" to buy sentech's MyWireless, meanwhile no one does because they all listend to a plank like you, Sentech decides its not worth their while AND WE ARE ALL BACK TO USEING FRIKEN DIALUP AGAIN.

Thanks but no thanks, whatever they offer I'm sure they can better it if they see a market.

I have a much better idea...

Sentech gives us a reasonable non-24 month option. Many of us "planks" now decide to try it out. People move over from Telkom ADSL in droves. Sentech decides its definitely worth their while and gives us even more competitive packages...

Until someone starts taking us seriously and stops ripping us off, you're damn right I'll be sticking to FRIKEN DIALUP.

Sentech has to realise this 24 month contract is probably the biggest stumbling block they have to pulling this off.

That is on the VSTAR system and not the MyWireless system.
And as you say, everyone will always have what ever bandwidth is available depending on whos doing what etc..
But in all fairness the way I see it, people on higher speed systems will probably get more.
For instance 512k peeps will probably get the full 3 mbits - 256k peeps - 1.5 mbits and 128k peeps - 0.75 mbits
On the other hand during peak hours you could drop below your level but one makes up for the other.

Regarding the 24 month contract, instead of just making a noise on the forum, email Winston Smith and let him know your feelings.

Not sure if anyone knows this but I phoned to enquire about the prices....

Which ever bandwidth option you go for,
DIVIDE IT BY 30
(apparently up to a max of 30 people can share it at a time)

so if i'm right - then the most expensive option would look something like this:

512k D/L shared by 30 people = 17k
256k U/L shared by 30 people = 8.5k

for what what was it.... R1449?

What a joke [B)]

yeah right.... the other one's got bells.

Geez, what part of contended bandwidth don't people understand????

Remember the old days of analogue dialup POPs?

ISPs had eg. 1:20 modem-to-user ratio, which meant 1 of the modems at the POP was "shared" by 20 users, and you'd sometimes get engaged signals etc etc, this is sortof the same.

Phone the ADSL helpdesk and ask them the same question

Yes, if we could get hold of Winston's email address. This could help.

Or maybe, instead of the man getting a flood of emails, he could come post perhaps a "sticky" where we could all post our comments about Sentech etc.

I have a few comments I would like clearing up. And I personally wont just buy into Sentech without my questions answered first.

Man, picnics .... you mustve dug deep to dig this old cow out of it's grave. ADSL also has contention ratios, so does dialup, and so do busses and mini-bus taxi's. But if you pay enough, you can can get a private taxi, but you'll pay more, and end up losing out as you get to the same place.

In the end, if you really need your own bandwith, you can organize with a isp. Plan to pay allot. But then you still probably going to be worried about the fact that your sharing an international line.
But I'm sure if you can get a license, a contracting company, you can lie down your own to the us. ofcourse ... from there ...

hehe

Other than the fact that you guys are complaining about the contract.
could you do me a favour and not apply, this means more bandwidth to me.
