Sentech will be used to spearhead investment

What a bunch of morons, the government hasn't learnt a thing from the whole Telkom mess. Bring on Telkom 2.

It has been in the works for a while. Sentech need the money to roll out a lot more towers, so that they can cover the whole country.

As for lies? The private sector didn't come to the party. When we were looking for a foreign bidder for the SNO, noone came forward (Fair enough, at the time the telecoms industry worldwide was in a shambles). Then the structure for the current SNO was created as a Plan B, only requiring 50% investment by the outsider. Once again, suitable bidders took ages (And not many were suitable)
 
One could argue that the restrictive regulations and continued government protectionism of Telkom through legislation was a major factor (if not thee major factor) in chasing away investment or potential investors in SA.

Look at Telkom, they were given the infrastructure by the state and look how they are milking the public for every cent.
Expanding Sentech's broadband network won't result in poor people in rural areas queueing up to sign up for overpriced broadband. IMO even if it costs R150 they still won't sign up.

Also when WiMax eventually comes all Sentech's equipment will have to be replaced meaning tax payer's money will have gone into the drain. Expanding something that won't be used just for it having to be replaced again.

There is already a market, the infrastructure is prohibited by government legislation. The private sector is standing queue to do this thing, let them.

Bang on the money, and guess where this legislation is? The DoC's panel-beated version is lying on Uncle Thabo's desk, where it has been for like ages.

I think what this woman is saying is that once they (read as gov and pals) have created the infrastructure (companies allowed to basically print money) with taxpayers cash, then they (read as gov, pals and said companies) will change the laws so that massive profits can be made from this so called managed liberalisation by them, and nobody else that perhaps doesnt look like them or something (re Ivy's comments).
Add in a couple of well placed pats on the back in the process and there you have it.

I really cannot see how the government expects people to take them seriously when they dream up schemes like this under the auspices of competition, all while at the same time trying to impose themselves on the 'independent' regulator.

If this continues, i'd have to get rid of ADSL because its just not worth it anymore!.

I've been saying for months "Lets wait and see what happens" and there's the problem. NOTHING is HAPPENING.

Out of all honesty, i could be using the cash on other things... paying close to R1000 for 2xAccounts + 192k dsl etc etc. (YES THE SLOWEST!!!) is absolutely pathetic.
