Here in South Africa, does the home owner get off scot free for defending his home from burglars. do the cops get off scot free if they shot a criminal? not all the time......

Knowing that some things are right and others wrong is an early thing kids pick up. If you constantly shout at a baby who cries, sooner or later that kid, growing up, will associate crying with anger from others and will be afraid to cry. Kids even understand concepts like death at much, much earlier ages than past generations.

I think this kid's trial at 12, while still insanely young, is justified. He knows right from wrong, he knew what he was doing, he conspired to do it with his friends and in the end, regardless of his emotional state or whether he actually intended for it to happen or not, it did anyway.

And he appears to have a good attitude about it. He admits wrongdoing, he doesn't seem to blame anyone else for his own actions and he takes responsibility for it. He can, in the future, help other kids who ended up just like him.

You mean when he gets out in 25 years time?
 
if he can do this at 12 what will he be capable of when he's 18 or so? better safe than sorry lock the blighter up he knew exactly what he was doing and what the consequences would be. if he was caught doing something he wasn't supposed to be doing under normal circumstances, the punishment would be dealt with by his parents and he knew well enough that wrong doing gets punishment. so, no i don't feel a bit sorry for him whatsoever.

^That, thats whats wrong with us human beings. A normal kid wont do such actions. Now you wanna treat this murderer like a normal kid. It could have been you being killed by this murderer. Lock him up.

No, what's wrong with "us human beings" is that, so often, all we can see in is black and white and we forget the countless variables involved in such a tragedy.

i EXTREMELY disagree. you even get adults who lack the basic understand of right and wrong, and in fact most people are not evil, they are fulfilling their desires, and that is interpreted as evil. babies are not born with a sense of right or wrong, nothing in the world is born with a sense of right or wrong. it is behaviour picked up through conditioning. if one parent encourages the baby to cry and anothe doesn't, the child will pick up behaviours. it is not the child's fault of the environment he is put into.

these days you have movies and games making these actions casual. they do not turn people into murderers, but they act as a stimulant which shows them how easy and rewarding it is. to an adult you can understand cause and effect, for a 12 year old to comprehend the effects of what he has down is unrealistic. most 12 years olds are getting into trouble and mischief in school.

we don't know what his upbringing was like, but the solution doesn't simply end with putting him away, people have to discover WHY it happened, WHY he developed the way that he did. he is still a human being who experiences fear and insecurity
 
Why don't they send him to military school and enforced military service at age 18, until age 37 at least. Same effect except he gets a chance to make something of himself still.

IIRC the part of your brain that acknowledges consequences only develops at the age of 19.... thus why so many younger people engage in very risky behavior.

I seriously doubt a twelve year old could have had the emotional maturity to fully grasp the consequences.

That being said, I feel he should get a lengthy sentence because he still murdered someone.
