Hi guys (and girls),

As the title suggests, I'm looking to optimise a website for search engine indexing. The website is for an event company (owned by my sister) specialising in weddings.

Can someone point me in the right direction to increase its reach, or PM me if you think you could do this yourself (with references).

TIA

Or better yet, their email is SO badly crafted that it comes out as spam and yet they advertise these WONDERFUL EMAIL MARKETING SERVICES (available in three colours) :)

Google ads you pay per click.

If it's just a basic html site you needs to insert meta tags into each page you want for a start, some basic ones here http://www.wordstream.com/meta-tags, then pick some keywords that work best. Content is usually the best way to go with getting traffic like articles etc. Also signup for google webmasters as it will give you info about search traffic

Best bet is to add yourself to google maps as a business listing as that helps people searching in your area aswell.

All that being said SEO is not a simple process, there is a lot Google takes into consideration.

I do online marketing, including SEO, and a colleague asked me a similar question this week relating to her husband's business website. I've reproduced my answer here.

Option 1: DIY SEO
Why? It's far more cost effective, and depending on how much needs to be done, may be all you need.
You'll need: time
Guides: http://searchengineland.com/guide/what-is-seo & http://moz.com/beginners-guide-to-seo

Option 2: AGENCY
Why? It should get the trick done, but is expensive. If you can expect a significant enough return from customers finding your product via organic search, this is an option. Expect to pay a pricey upfront "site analysis" fee, and a monthly retainer. Make sure you fully understand what is being provided and run at the first sign of bs.
You'll need: money

Option 3: CONTRACTOR or HIRE IN-HOUSE
Why? It's more cost-efficient than an agency, more time-efficient than DIY. As with the agency option, make sure you fully understand what is being provided and run at the first sign of bs.
You'll need: to know what you want, and to trust your freelancer or in-house hire.

I've also sent a PM requesting more details. Depending on the site involved, I may be able to help, or make suggestions. If anybody else would like advice from somebody that's not trying to sell you a monthly retainer, feel free to pop me a PM.

Thanks for the responses guys. No worries about hijacking the thread, we live to share :)

Mine is an HTML site, no Google adwords in place yet.

@Full_MeT4L I'm replying to your PM now

I would like some help too. :)

The thing is my site is not about making money. I do have some affiliate links but they generate almost nothing. I'm just trying to help people. Unfortunately my site ranks very poorly on Google.

So if someone has some advice or is really cheap with SEO this is my site: http://hostingweb.co.za

Go and search for "google seo guide" and click on the first (non-advert) link. That's Google's own starter guide for SEO and worth running through if you have 0 knowledge on SEO.

You'll be competing directly with all the big hosts in the seo space. They DO make money so obviously spend on seo.

Have popped you a PM with a short recommendations document for your sister's site, Moshidi! :)

Many thanks again :)

a friend of mine has her own wedding stationary business and she's been getting a lot of press for her work.

one thing she does is collaborate with the event managers/photographers/cake makers and what not. So when they post images on their site (like a photographer would do) they credit her and link back to her website.

with 0 promotion and "SEO" she's made quite a bit of a dent on facebook and she regularly gets ranked #1 for wedding stationers. gets 15+ queries via her site a week, and she literally just put up a site because her email was going to it.

SEO is nothing more than networking with other sites to get links back for relevant content. she does it by word of mouth and getting the photographers/event managers to link back to her whenever she is mentioned.

What you're describing is simply good link-building practice. This is big part of any effective SEO plan, but definitely not all there is to it! Hats off to her - most people struggle with this aspect the most. :)
