It was a "disgrace" that the world football body Fifa was not using video technology to assist referees officiating during World Cup games, the Independent Democrats said on Wednesday.

"Frankly, it is a disgrace that Fifa continues to languish in the 1800s because of the views of one man, Sepp Blatter. It is also grossly unfair to blame the referees for human errors that could have happened to anyone," said Joe Mcgluwa, the party's spokesman on sport.

He was referring to refereeing mistakes in games that saw Mexico and England being eliminated from the World Cup. England was denied a goal during a game with Germany while Mexico lost to Argentina in a match in which the referee allowed an Argentinian goal although the striker was offside.

These errors caused an outcry, with many people calling for the introduction of video replays to eliminate human errors.

"Fortunately Argentina and Germany went on to beat Mexico and England so convincingly that their positions in the quarterfinals are not in question.

"If this had not been the case, the lack of video support for the refs involved would have left an even sourer taste in everyone's mouths," Mcgluwa said.

He laughed off Fifa president Blatter's apology to the two teams involved, saying the apology "comes too late".

Blatter apologised to the two teams on Tuesday and said Fifa would hold discussions on "goal-line technology" to rule out most mistakes.

"Sepp Blatter and no-one else is to blame. No amount of apologies to the teams, actions against the two referees, or spin that Fifa is suddenly interested in taking another look at introducing video technology is going to change that.

"As the largest sporting event on earth, the World Cup should also be the most advanced in terms of technological assistance to referees that could rule out most mistakes," Mcgluwa said.

Fully agree with these comments. Sepp is a tool of the highest order.

Ha ha ha what the hell is it with politicians and them feeling it is their right to mingle in sport?!?

I'm sure because the ID says so FIFA will run out and do it

While I agree they should make better use of technology, I do not think the situation is a "disgrace". Child abuse, murder, laundering money from pension funds, etc. are a "disgrace".

Of course it is a disgrace to the sport. It is 2010 not 1966. Rugby, cricket, tennis make use of technology yet the biggest sport on the planet is stuck in time.

Don't come with this BS that it will slow the game down, how long do players argue with the ref? A replay would take 1 minute maybe less.

I agree. People are making way too much of this. Sh|t happens. Deal with it. I agree that goal-line technology should be considered, but at what cost to the flow of a game? Where do you draw the line? Is it just for decisions pertaining to goals? What about controversial red cards, free-kicks, penalties, corners.. etc.

Eventually the flow of the game will be disrupted so much, it will end up like watching a cricket game.

lol, so use no technology, let the innocents get red carded thanks to the cheating ******* who take advantage of the new laws etc, and we have a pretty decent disgrace :p.
Football is a joke to watch, it really is. Which other sport has this much controversy and cheating in this day and age?

Not sure but i can tell you the acting is getting worse, instant replays would pretty much stamp it out over night.

Of course some people love seeing players act more than watching a good solid game of football with no cheating, good decisions, goals that are nearly 1m over the line given. Nobody wants that dude. Everyone wants the human element, the diving, the cheating, the rubbish decisions it seems. It is about the only sport i know that openly allows cheating.

I have to agree. I have given it a fair chance (again) during this world cup and I have yet again drawn the same conclusion. I have no idea why it is such a popular sport. At risk of being slightly controversial, which I am always happy to do, I think it is as a result of it being so simple, it has very little to it, and as a result appeals to far more people....
