Hi guys

Might be a stupid question, but how do I find the serial number of a PC I built myself? I'm about to order components for a PC, but I need to know where to find the serial number for the PC?

Also, the cmd command to get serial number doesn't work on my older PC (It shows blank). Any way to fix this?

The PC itself won't have a serial number, but the individual components such as the motherboard, graphics card, etc. will have serial numbers.

I'm guessing you want to find the model number of your motherboard and not the serial number, because you only use serial numbers when you RMA broken components.

You can run CPU-z to get the motherboard model numbers. The motherboard will tell us what kind of RAM, CPU & PCI/PCI-E cards (including graphics cards) it supports.

Could you tell us what components you're looking at getting?

I need a serial key to activate a Windows 8 CD (Supplied by UCT). I'm guessing this means the motherboard serial number?

The components are posted on the PC build thread.

you mean you need a license key for activation? that is not a serial number of the pc. If the windows 8 installation media was supplied by UCT then they must also supply the license key

Are you saying you are looking for a serial number on your PC to activate windows?

One of the fields I need to fill in on the UCT form is : "Serial Number of computer system which software will be loaded":

EDIT: I need to fill in this form to get the Windows CD from UCT.

Ahh ok, that makes more sense. Just use the serial number of your motherboard, that is the main component.

I want to laugh, but hey... Not everyone understands...

If UCT supplied you with a Windows 8 CD (DVD most probably), they should have provided you with the serial key (activation key for the more understanding folks). This can either be in the casing or box the CD (DVD) came with or they should provide it to you via another medium (email, piece of paper, sticker, etc.). Go to whichever department you got the Installation Disc from, take the disc with, and ask them to please show or give you the serial key (activation key).

Edit (OP updated needs): You should ask UCT (the IT guys or whomever) to say specifically what they want (motherboard serial number, IP address?)? I remember SU having serial numbers on every PC, but that wasn't personal computers.

I think you misunderstand.

Thank you :)

Btw Emile. Is the Powercolor 7870 giving you any problems? And is the power supply sufficient (ie not under strain). I'm thinking of getting the same GPU and a 650W power supply.

Just get the XFX ProSeries 550W PSU for R700. Its the best value for money for a mid-high end PSU.

There is the normal 7870 OC and the 7870 LE Myst. I'm using the Myst, performance is great, but the fan can get loud. The Myst is not for sale anymore though. The 7870 OC is also great, my brother uses it and he has no issues. What PSU do you have or intending to get? That XFX550 will be perfect.

I am sure they want motherboard serial number to comply with they licencing scheme wih Microsoft and make sure that licence numbers are matching SLIC in BIOS (if present). Otherwise it would be a sticker attached to the case.

Hi. Open computer and find numbers on the attached stickers. If computer case is sealed, you can read serial numbers from DMI using diagnostic utilities. For big brands go to the BIOS setup, you will see serial numbers on the info page.

The OP's PC is a custom built PC if I'm correct. But yeah, check the BIOS for serial numbers, or the box you motherboard came in.
