Seriously done with the utterly expensive DStv

The biggest issue is Sport thats only available on Premium. This should be declared illegal and anti-competitive as we pay taxes for departments and ministers of sport. They can buy the rights, hence getting advertising preference with their logos all over the show, but must be forced to make it available to opposition channels as well at reasonable rates.

You CANNOT watch sport online. Not in any possible way is that a permanent option. I also would have cancelled my DSTV if i had another place to watch sport.

Also not a sport person so cancelled DSTV ages ago. Don't need to be watching brain rotting stuff like the Kardashians anyway.

I've managed just fine.

Although the picture quality is not as good, but it is perfectly watchable.

At the OP, please explain to me where you'll find an alternative provider that offer as much content and channels? If you disable 15 channels on your premium, why don't you just get yourself a smaller package?

Because they only make the most popular channels available with sport (and dross) on the Premium package - comparison here:

http://www.igeek.co.za/2011/05/09/dstv-packages-breakdown/

They should make a "Premium - No Sport (or channels above 300)" package available for about R300/mth

Canceled mine a while ago, it was nice loafing in front of the tv watching documentaries for a while

But one can only watch so much ice road truckers on discovery,
or the history channel with either Hitler or far fetched alien/monster conspiracies
or the other documentary channels only showing cake boss or some variation thereof
The same stuff in the same time slot every day, and when it ends its starts all over again

No thanks, traded it in for decent uncapped.

What some don't realise is that there are sports fans who don't like other people and would not go to a sportbar (like me.) and then there are teetotallers and super religious people with their own reasons.

On the HD not being HD issue, that's why we haven't upgraded to DSTV HD yet. The HD series I get from the internet vastly differs from the HD my friends watch on DSTV. So I'll keep downloading in 720p.

I'm a sports fanatic so doesn't matter how expensive DSTV Premium becomes we'll still pay...

Ummmm.. the HD broadcast IS HD... most of the time.

Sometimes people get confused and tune their TVs to AV1 or AV2 or whatever. They then watch the HD channels and notice that it's in crap quality. What they fail to realize is that their TVs need to be switched to HDMI. (I've had to tell this to countless people that complain about DSTV's HD broadcasts).

Yes I know it's "HD", but the quality of the HD doesn't look anything like what I'm use to downloading. I've done a comparison with different shows shown on MNet HD and those that I've downloaded, huge difference. So that's probably not "most of the time".

Multichoice are brilliant in making people believe that they actually need it.
Once you cancel it stars to dawn on on you what a waste of time it really is.

When you have the pleasure of unlimited ad free tv at your disposal,it really is no contest.
Besides, how much sport can you watch.

Yeah 720P is considered the standard for HD TV broadcasts.
Not for a while, the overwhelming majority of HDTV broadcasts (incl MC) are at 1080i

Then in my option you have something misconfigured on the HDPVR->HDTV side.

With movies for example, only time downloads approach the quality of that on a DSTV HD channel is if they are very large i.e. > 10GB thus with a bitrate approaching DSTV HD channels which run at an avg of 16Mbps.
