Seriously who is coming up with these software developer interviews?

Everytime this happens I say eff you very much I don't want to work for you.
If I'm feeling malicious I just make up a fake payslip with like twice what my comp is for the fun of it and watch them run for the hills.
They dodged a bullet.

No.
You, the recruiter and the company serve yourselves first.
Tell me why if you disagree.

The recruiter will be loyal to whoever pays their check, or risk losing a customer. To them, you are an item in their sales pipeline, nothing more. They don't care if you're making a potentially life changing decision, that's not the game to them. The example of the real estate agent is exactly what I've been saying.

We sold our place in record time and got more than we bargained for. It took under two weeks to get a signed deal. I was treated like royalty as was the new buyer. We both left feeling like we got a good deal.

In that equation, who paid their cheque? Buyer or seller? We had the stock and the buyer was willing to pay the asking price.

At the end of the day we controlled the sale and signed the bottom line on the offer.

If you're selling and there's a shortage of stock, you'll treat the seller like a king or risk losing an opportunity.

This all seems very unusual for a role like you described (“high performance technical team in one of the top 10 companies in the world”).

We typically go through 6-12 hours of technical interviews and get the consensus of at least 5-8 people before hiring anyone.
I am simply adding my comments to the thread as info and/or comparison for other people. I don't really want to argue methods or outcomes. And I do not want to provide more detail on who we are and what we do in a public forum. I don't have 6-12 hours to spend on recruiting per person, neither does my team, we have actual work to do. In the past 3 years we had one resignation (emigration), and one contract cancellation, the team grew by 4 people.

We've already guessed you work for Microsoft.

Though in theory it could be IBM, Apple or Google. ;)

I dodged a missile.

Well aren't you the little unicorn that has all the great experiences. Well done you. Let me guess, your experiences with lawyers have only been smooth and you've never been fscked over by a landlord either? You're living a different life than most, and you don't even realise it.

I have never experienced what you are referring to.

External recruiters (not internal talent acquisition) have always gotten me a better deal, not a worse one.

They get a solid percentage cut (5% last I saw) of your annual which is a significant amount of cash if they get you even 10% more.

It’s no different than estate agents who will try to sell for as much as possible to increase their gains.

But anyone really good at this kind of job knows exactly what’s realistic and what isn’t and maybe you’ve just played the unrealistic card every time and the recruiter has brought you back to reality.

Maybe I've just had bad recruiters then, everytime they've tried to "bring me back to reality" I've done better on my own.

Salty and you haven't told us why yet other than you seem to start from a position of mistrust.

It probably stems from low self esteem. Don't live your life worrying about being done in by others. Rather just say no if you think you're being lowballed. Problem solved.

Well quite.
Start using other recruiters or make it clear what you're in the market for in the first place rather than swim with sharks.

Didn't realise you're a therapist too.
Thanks for the concern.

There certainly are terrible recruiters out there, no doubt about that.

But they also tend to work for terrible companies who don't take them to task so probably helping you dodge a bullet.

Are you hiring software engineers?

I will give you 10 guesses, and deny each one.
BTW the top 10 companies in the world are not all IT companies, half are petrochemical industries.

I expect we have very different definitions of “high performance technical team” and “top companies”.

Disagree. Depends on who's metrics you use.
What does top mean? Turnover? Operating profit? Market cap?

Here's the list by market cap. Only one oil company and a bunch of tech in the top 10...
