Got this beauty today.

Users was unable to log in via VPN. It connects, but then rejects your connection attempt(s).

Solution :

Stop the service, uninstall it, reinstall it (and possible reconfiguration) and everything should work.

NOTE : Make a note of any special setting(s) you've employed to ensure you put it back to the previous state.

Background : Server's NIC driver was starting to flake out. (Intel NIC). So I dropped another one in, thinking that it was the onboard NIC itself. But the same issue - that the server would stop responding to file/email/vpn requests, and would need a reboot to get going.

The speed of the NIC was dropped down from Gig speed to 100base, but nothing helped.

Interestingly, sometimes a switch reboot was needed to get things going again. Don't ask why. Anyways...

Things deterioriated to the point where a 65Mb file copied over in 30 minutes. And it was not the switch, or the NIC's. It was something software based.

So I got gatvol with the issues today, reinstalled the Intel software drivers, and bumped the speed back up to 1000base, and switched back to the onboard NIC's.

Then everything worked fine, fast speeds etc. Except for the VPN which wouldn't. Rebooted the server, but VPN still was offline (although the RRAS service was started and everything was right).

So all that remains is to see whether it was the intel nic drivers or whether it is something else...

RRAS vpn's will never achieve more than 1mb whilst connected

What are your VPN policies on the server like ?
