Multiple domain controllers running Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server have been detected in your domain. This computer will shut down in 60 minutes unless you remove all but one of these from the domain.

Anyone have any suggestions?

This is the only Small Business Server running and on this doamin.

Thanks,

Something in the SBS components is not registered properly. The SBCore service is that: The core SBS service that identifies that the server is properly setup and functioning with the SBS components.

Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Small Business Server. Go through the add/remove to reinstall the SBS components. Hopefully that registeres whatever is not functioning.

What is the server configuration? Multihomed or single network card?

How many client PC's connecting to it? Anybody running a virtual win2003 server on one of these?

If all else fails, chuck it out, and install SME Server 7.x - this will also emulate a WinNT4 domain should you need a domain without having to shell out money for server2003.

Other than that I don't know what to say.

You can't have 2 domain controllers on one network when you have a small business server installed on the domain.

I.e: the SMB server can be the only domain controller on the network.

It's a limitation Microsoft have on their small business products, reduced prices but it's intended for small businesses only... Plus I hope u know there is a 75 user limit with SMB?

Hope it helps!

Put it this way you prob have another windows server in the environment acting as the DC, right?!

Run the DCPROMO /? command check Witch argument I'll use can't remember off the top of my head but could be /demote or something to that sort ( you have to demote the old DC, not the SBS server!)

Only run the /forceremove as a last resort!!!! If u have exchange installed on the old DC, you have to remove it first! Iv borked a server by forcing a demote and all research leads me to the idea coz exchange wasn't uninstalled first!

Thanks for the input guys, it seems to be stable at the moment and nothing has come up again in the event logs.

The strange thing is, it is the only SBS2003 in the office, all other pc's run XP and only has one domain controller running.

Anyhow, let sleeping dogs lie, now that it's working.

Thanks again,

What anti-virus are your running? Were there any lsas errors in the event log? I had similar problem and resolved it by patching.. suspected NOD.

that error also occurs if you have a SBS 2003 server on a network with _no_ domain controller. i had a similar situation at a client with a small 5 PC network, so they didn't bother setting up a domain - caused the SBS server to barf and reboot every hour. they solved it by uninstalling Active Directory (which they didn't really need) and just used normal user account control. if you use active directory, you have to set up the SBS as a domain controller as well...
