Hi guys i'm looking to setup a server with 6 users on it using windows server with full functionality and restrictions on certain users. Is there anyone who can help me with this or is there a site that i can go to that step by step instructions on how setup the domain services and trees and what not.

Which server product? Have u purchased it yet? Define full functionality, define certain restrictions....

Will it be a DC? The only DC? what infrastructure do u have at the moment?

Okay sorry for so little explanantion. Okay in a nutshell i want to run windows small business server or whichever one will suit my needs. I want to have thin clients setup for all the users. All of them should connect to the server with limited capabilities like limited browsing of internet, logs of emails sent and received, unable to copy or share files like photos and music. All work done on spreadsheets and stuff should be all saved on server.

www.clarkconnect.com will do what you want it to do. Drop that ghastly windows server.. its not needed on such a small network unless they run terminal services.

Uhh sorry we will have to run terminal services as well server we have already is a dell 2590 Intel Quad Xeon with 8Gb's of ram, 2 320gb hdd ses drives, dual motherboard :D

Whoever sells you your IT stuff must really really love you guys as clients!

hmm and why is that????

You pay for really intense hardware for a 6 people network. How much did your OS + hardware cost?.. for 6 people...

Perhaps I am missing some kinda really high process customized application you have running on the system? You like using it for Pastel or something?

You do know a Linux thin client solution would have been way cheaper? like way way cheaper... and more stable and reliable?

lol okay dude sorry for the mislead we got the server at a very good deal the guy we got it from had his order of that server canceled so had to sell it asap. We wouldn't have taken such a hardcore server if it wasn't for the price. Anyways we starting with 6 users and that will increase to about 40 torwards the end of this year. So is there anyone willing to help?

How many servers you got? If you only have one then remember that you cant enable terminal services on a DC. The server should be OK for 40 users, depending on the applications that your run. What OS are you using, if you use a 32 bit, just watch out for the kernel memory limit. Also consider using a second server for fail-over, load balancing. If your single server tanks then you have 40 users doing nothing....

As far as locking the server down, use GPO's. Having users save their work on the server is not such a problem with thin clients as these cant store data anyway. Are users going to access this system remotely??

Well you can use Ubuntu for your thin client as it can run teminal services - we do this. Have a remote server in Jhb and can access the apps from Somerset West. This will save you on 6 XP licences (R10K-R12K) and your seat licences which is R3k per 5 users.

If your looking at a Windows solution for 40 users, then rather pay a company to handle this. I guess your looking at about R10K per user at the end of the day. You will need somebody with MCSE qualifications to get this right.

1.Will this be a Domain Controller? Standalone server? File server ?

2. Where are u situated?

3.Type of company

4. PM me if u interrested on assesment

You can save on the XP licenses by using Ubuntu on the client; you could also use ThinClient devices to save on the XP client license. Unfortunately you don't save on the TSCAL by using Ubuntu, that you require irrespective of type of client device.

R10K per user is probably 30-40% too much for this solution. PM if you want details on pricing....

Just checked and there is a solution that we offer which has been made free for under 10 users should you be interested.

Most of what you want can indeed be done, but with time and tweaking. For logging mail, you'll probably need a 3rd party program, depending on which mail system you use. Exchange is great but doesn't log that kind of info too nicely (this was with 2003 edition)

Group policy would probably take care of the rest.

Thanks alot guys for the feedback i really appreciate it. Just got me thinking now which route to take
