OK simple question for you guys...
I have a 6230i and want to check my mail (gmail account) from my phone but I can't figure out what settings to get. I just use MobiMail now to check my gmail and it works fine but I want to use the phones built in email thing. Please tell me step by step what settings to get and any extra stuff I need to know..
Thanks in advance

Dont bother with helpdesk - google uses nonstandard ports

But I could be wrong - they may actually know what they are doing.

The important things are:
On the web:
1. Make sure POP is enabled in gmail (login on the web and check settings/pop).
On your phone:
2. incoming server name is mail.google.com, NB - secure access must be enabled (ssl) - if you have an option to put a port number in, it is 995
3. outgoing server is vodacom's smtp server - now this you will have to get from helpdesk (I am an MTN user). If you can't use this for some reason, you can try smtp.gmail.com with SSL enabled and port number 465
4. user name is your regular gmail address inluding the @gmail.com

pm me if you need any more help

Hey feo

The 6230i does not support SSL and therefore you will never get Gmail to work... I tried for ages to get it to connect but alas all in vain.

There is another option which worked for me while I used to use my 6230i for mobile email access. Register a new e-mail address at bluebottle.com (www.bluebottle.com) it offers a simple 200MB mailbox with SIMPLE POP3. Set up forwarding on your gmail account to the bluebottle account, and then set up the 6230i to get your messages from the bluebottle POP3 server. You can also set up your phone to use the bluebottle smtp server with no problems.

Works really well. One note of caution though, the email client on the 6230i is shocking... to the extent that it WILL turn you off mobile e-mail.

Anyways, I hope this helps a little.

well, yes and no... depending on the firmware version, there is actually an option on the phone to enable an ssl connection. problem is that it doesn't seem to work :)

i've also tried endlessly to get access to my gmail account on my 6230i, even using a different email client that i downloaded, but, indeed, all in vain.

i've settled for checking my account by using the gmail mobile link on the built in xhtml browser ;)

edrobinson, did you get it to work with this particular phone, or with a different make/model?

Well I actually can check gmail on my 6230i with this app called MobiMail and it's really fast. Retrieving 10 emails is +-10KB retrieved in +-5secs. I just wanted to try the phones built in email feauture. It seems like a bug on the 6230i but I've heard it's fixed in the latest firmware. So hopefully this weekend it's off to VodaWorld for a firmware flash. Thanks for all the help.
