My Dad's friend owns his own car garage and at present he has to stay at work once the garage has closed to input invoices on to the computer.

It is just an application that he uses for this but once they are submitted they are stored in to a database system somewhere. He is wanting to be able to do his invoicing from home so is there a way of setting up a network to make this possible?

I was thinking of some sort of remote access set up so that he could create a connection from home to the garage and use the application but is there a better way that anyone can think of?

Firstly you'll need a connection from both ends. Get a dynamic IP and use remote desktop.

Hamachi in such a setup could also work well.

Are both connections using dsl or something else?

the problem with logmein is the person at the other end needs to allow the connection every time (as far as I know). We use it at work, excellent for remote support. Hamachi will work. Also you can register the garage with no-ip or dyndns. Them configure the pc as the dmz on the router. You should be able to rdp to that pc, just enable remote desktop first.

Both connections use DSL.

With Hamachi, is there a sort of option to automatically allow a remote assistance request as he would be at home when he was trying to set up the connection?

I'd use VNC myself :D

I'd be careful with VNC - there are hacks and tricks hackers can use to bypass the VNC login screen if they want to do so.

But yes, if you can create a VPN connection first, then connect with VNC/Remote Desktop then that'll be good enough.

Good point :)
