Hi All. I am needing to set a VPN up. After doing some research i decided to use OpenVPN along with dyndns so i can access files from my server using any of my computers, tablets or cellphones.

Major problem i have is that i dont understand anything on how to set OpenVPN up with all those certificate and config files needed. All the manuals and tutorials online seem very strange to me as i am new to VPN's.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

I've worked from the Easy Windows Guide and found it to be clear enough to get somewhere useful ...mostly. There's one NASTY caveat in there they don't specifically tell you about: when you run the app from the GUI that doesn't mean that the verkakte service has also actually started up ..THAT little gem gave me a jolly rogering for hours until I (via phone a friend) winkled it out. Just work through that guide, you should get there.

I would use Teamviewer if I was new to VPN. It is a lot easier to use.
That said though it is not likely to work as well from a cellphone.

Shame on all of you :rolleyes: ..what happened to the enterprising/bash away at it and LEARN something new spirit that this place used to have? (that said, OP did seem to fold rather quickly)
 
I was going to assist, but to be honest, teamviewer is just much less hassle, and as you said, the OP didnt seem to have tried very hard
 
I've been using teamviewer for about 2 years now for remote control and file transfering PC to PC but the android and iOS version of it does not support file transfer or file viewing hence the need to set a VPN up with a domain like dyndns.

to bdt thank for the easy to use guide. Got the service started but have no idea where in the SERVER config file to put the dyndns server so still cannot access it via android or iOS.

Mikrotik VPN works well. Hardware device so it's always on and ready.

Don't think you need the Dyndns in the server config, just in the client config file (remote yourdyndns.dyndns.org 1194)

You will need a Dyndns updater loaded somewhere on your server or router to keep Dyndns updated with your IP.

This^
Just port forward port 1194 from your router to your pc.
The connecting IP is only in the client.ovpn file along with the cert names you setup.
Been using openvpn for years and its stable like a rock.
