I've got myself a VPS in the UK to play with. I'm busy trying to set up an ftp server. I'm using IIS 7 and windows 2008 server FTP 7.5 server.

I've set up all the things, and given firewall permission for ports 21 and 22. I can connect to the server locally without an issue.

The thing is, when I try login from SA using firefox or explorer, I get a username and password prompt, and then get error 425: "Can't open data connection".

Now here is the weird bit: when I login using a windows command prompt, I can get in without an issue; but I'd like to use a GUI.

I've tried hosing the FTP server instead with filezilla server, but get the same issue. I can login using the command prompt just fine, but cant use a GUI.

(I've tried turning off my firewall on this side - no joy)

You've toggled between passive/active?

Try this

ftp://username:password@ipaddress (see below example, the emoticon shouldn't be there)

example ftp://agentrfr:[email protected]

You can either use ip address or host name

..which vps service are You using? link please

Awesome, that worked thanks. It seems it was a firewall issue on the UK side. Some quirky catch statement in the firewall ruleset. I'm using a VPS smack bang in the middle of London CBD from eukhost: http://www.eukhost.com/windows-vps-hosting.php

Since I've been a customer for a while, I only pay 20 GBP per month. (Still a tad on the expensive side, but I need a windows VPS next door to the London Exchange for my trading programs. Latency of 0.2ms is useful to say the least.)
