I have the following idea and would like to know firstly if it is possible and secondly how to do it if it is in fact possible. Basically I want to get the fasted possible internet connection for the lowest possible price, this is my idea:

1. A friend of mine has a very nice stable 4mbs adsl line.
2. I am thinking of getting the 384 adsl line from telkom.
3. What I would like to do is to setup an isp type server at my friends place and connect directly to him as my isp.
4. The assumption is then that I would use a local connection to connect to him which is pretty fast. I would then be connected to the internet via him through the faster connection. This most probably will give me a faster than the normal 384 connection.
5. The first price would be if I could connect directly with my adsl modem to him setting him up as my provider. This would save me about R 75 a month seeing that I would not need an ISP
6. The second price would be to use telkom as my isp making use of their free local bandwith to connect to the server(Probably a proxy server) at my friend's place.

Has anybody ever done anything like this?
Would I indeed have faster speeds?
How would you go about setting up that kind of server(preferably linux Linux) and how would you connect to it ?

If you line is only a 384 connection, you will not get a faster than 384 connection

is this assuming that your friend is running a radius server or just a proxy for you to connect to? You must remember that even though he has a 4mbit line, his upload speed is limited to 512k and thus you'll only get a theoretical max of around 80% of that. It's also a silly idea since you'll be using 2x the amount of cap with your downloading from him and him uploading to you.

You will still need an ISP to connect you to your mate. Nobody can just install a DSLAM and provide DSL connectivity. Telkom owns the ATM which ALL dsl conectivity runs through. Sorry, nice try, and I wish it wasn't so.

If your friend doesn't live too far away, maybe you can try to share the connection over a wireless link. You can then pay him an amount every month towards it or something. This is similar to how a WISP works, and I don't think it's legal, but I stand under correction.
