But at least I know it can be done

Ok I think I have it

So end December 2016, I'll owe just under R280,000.00 and the car will have 117,000km and be almost 7 years old. I can't guess what they'll give me as trade - but I'd hope around R200,000

Error in a calculation ?

I know what I'm doing ... ;)

That's why I wanted to see everything on paper to plan ahead

ok, what I dont get is you bought a car for 240k and after more than 2 years of paying it you will still owe 280k??
why is it still so high?

That seems strange yes, ones settlement value cant be higher than the purchase value unless in the 1st or 2nd or 3rd months where the interest for those month might make it higher.

The Volvo was only 18 months old and due the low value, there was a carry over of 100k+

In essence I'm financing the car at what I should have paid initially

Eina.
I don't think you will see 200k trade in for a 7 year old car :-/
