Wanting to setup a FTP site on my local machine which I can access from anywhere.

If anyone could assist me in this regard as it would be highly appreciated.

This is not really feasible if you are on a service with dynamic IP. You'd have to go through the process of setting up DynDNS or similar service.

Otherwise, there are plenty of free FTP servers that you can download and install. There really isn't THAT much to set up with FTP. It's not a particularly secure protocol, though, so be careful.

You would need to run the actual FTP software on your pc (Filezilla make an easy to setup server).

You would need to subscribe to a dynamic dns service and then either use a router that supports it or download a software client to run on your pc.

You would then need to set up port forwarding on your router to forward a port on it to the internal ip and ftp port of your pc.

I'm just assuming here that you have the usual setup with adsl and a router. If that's not what you have then please give more info on your internet connection and network setup. Also bear in mind if you do have adsl, trying to download something to somewhere else will be really slow because adsl upload is slow.

How would I be doing this (subscribe to a dynamic dns service) and how do I setup.

rorz0r pretty much said it all. It's easy and also secure if you use some security.

Create a free account at www.dyndns.com, once logged in choose Add Host Services, enter a name (eg: NeoT.isa-geek.net) fill in your current IP, or just click the link and it will fill in what it thinks is your IP (may get it wrong if you're using a proxy). To keep your IP updated with dyndns you'll either have to use their application or let your router automatically update it if it can.

Then in your router forward the port that you've set up in the FTP server software.

Also it's a good idea to use some security (SSL/TLS in FileZilla server) and enable logging so if you think anything strange is happening you can search them to check.

For FileZilla and help on it goto http://filezilla-project.org

Also incase you don't know, you won't be able to test if it's working from within your home network. You will either have to ask someone else, or use a website that will check if it's working. It would be a good idea to make a test account when giving the username and password to someone or a site for testing.
