I am sure this question is anwered somewhere but I cannot find it.

I want to setup a wireless network to cover my house.
What do I need?

I want to share the internet connection at the same time.

Could you tell me exactly what I need? (access point, router, hub, aerial????)

Thanks,

Any links that show me where I can buy this stuff from would also be great...

can get urself a wireless router, then just link everything up to there....via cables or wireless cards.
Cant suggest any coz I still looknig for an affordable one.
But from what I hear, if u got the cash...go for netgear or d-link...2 most common ones where u can buy at almost any pc shop. Though its probably from R700 to R800...speeds will vary amongst models.

Although I saw this IPtime wireless router going for R250....and I use their hub and know that they make pretty decent stuff....but too bad there's no stock now anywhere in SA.

Think the router should be able to cover ur house...unless u got urself a huge house~

I can't find a router for less than R1000

I can find tons of access points for under R1000 though, I have no idea what the difference is but I guess I need a router not an AP?

These are the two different things.. Which one do I need?
http://www.digitalplanet.co.za/shop/product.asp?stockID=60095 (R599)
http://www.digitalplanet.co.za/shop/product.asp?stockID=91028 (R1300)

From what I think I know, if I have a huge house then I need 1 router and multiple access points? Which are cheaper so it's not to bad....

I am using a Netgear that combines the modem, router, switch, 802.11g access point, and SPI True Firewall - see

http://soholink.co.za/shop/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=16&products_id=76

Then I have added an internal USB adaptor into each pc with a permanent Wireless USB 2.0Adapter for access, I have used in the ps's TP-link, Intellilink and Netgear USB adaptors - I found it a soholink.co.za / matrixwarehouse.co.za / esquire.co.za when they had specials.

This network cover in excess of 3000 sqm with 10 pc's connected.

Cool.... Isn't 3000 a bit big though? I have heard about being a bad neighbour and interfering with other peoples network... Is this a problem with this router?

The coverage should affect a few of my neighbours but they are fortunately for me not that technologically advanced.

Alternatively, the LinkSys WRT54GL is also a good all-in-one to go for - I got mine for around R600 from www.pcmall.co.za.

Nice thing about the GL is the open source firmware you can get - this baby runs on Linux. :)

wrt rules.

I see Matrix Warehouse were advertising them for R700 as well.

Not really. The Linksys WRT54G used to be Linux inside and a Broadcom reference design board. Nowadays they run VXWorks, unless you get the WRT54GL which is still Linux based.

Linksys doesn't use Cisco processors or software. They simply got bought out by Cisco.

My apologies. Made a (stupid?) assumption that the Cisco Logo on the unit meant Cisco inside. Regardless, the router works well for me (DD-WRT firmware running on it), and allows me to administer my little network very nicely.

As a side note, it is suspected (confirmed at one point by LinkSys) that this is/was the number one wireless AP by units sold in the world..

Thanks Bwana,

But since the one router can cover 3000 m2 I think my house will be covered quite fine :)...

Now I'm just waiting for payday...

A lot depends on the thickness of your walls To get from one end of my house to the other is only about 25m but there are at least 5 load baring walls which beats the hell out of any signal. :)

I think I would have the same problem except that my router is being installed in the ceilling so hopefully it will cover everywhere no problem....

Was going to do the same thing but my roof leaks during extreme circumstances and there are walls up there too!!!
