Hi,

My broadband bills were getting out of hand, so I decided to migrate from Telkom's 4MB shaped ADSL to Neotel's Unlimited CDMA service.

The Neotel service is terrible for gaming, (high Latency, low upstream bandwith) so I'm thinking that rather than cancelling my ADSL I should downgrade to 384 with a small cap.

Question:

I play COD and BF on the SAIX servers and a little XBOX live. Will ADSL 384 work for me?

Thanks,

It should be fine. I play Crysis on a 384 line with a shaped account. No problems at all, as long as I dont have anything else using bandwidth at the same time.

Nothing more anoying than dying in the middle of a fire fight cause little sister decided to google the meaning of life.. lol

Same problem here.

My brother has a ping of 50 in COD4 (on a 384), but when I google "Does Malema qualify as human?", his ping goes to ~800.

Might just be what I googled, though...

:D

Yeah, games work perfectly on 384k....it doesn't even need 384k...something lower would work too. The latency just needs to be good.

Perfectly normal. You might be able to reduce the effect by enabling QoS.

Your ping should be about 60-80 in Cod4. Why small cap? Local only cap is cheap so u could get like 10 gig. Like the other said don't let someone else use the net when u playing your your ping skyrockets.

Ja. I couldn't be bothered setting it up on a 105WR though...

The router makes something relatively simple, so complicated.... My linksys takes 5 clicks and it's done...

Damn Telkom cheap a$$ stuff...

I've played with 384 since I started. Its all about the latency. Heck, I've even played on a 192 line and that was fine as well.

On my 384 line I was often first in the SGS server when a new map loaded in CSS.

true, just watch out for games that have master server overseas. Without the master server, you will not see any locals.

my god yes! that router is the devil man! wireless is impossible to do with it! nothing on earth want's to work with it, but then again, at least my wireless is safe from hackers :D

Thanks all, great news!

CrzWaco, I was under the impression that local only ADSL is next to useless for BattleField and XBL. Despite the fact that the in game traffic is local or peer-to-peer they need to authenticate with master servers outside of the country.

Will be happy to be told I'm wrong.

I am on 384 and I get great pings. COD4 I am getting about 35, which is normally way lower than others. If you plan on playing BF you will need more than a small cap, I was keen on buying it but was warned that it enjoys eating cap for breakfast, lunch and supper, O and some more for desert.

Define 'out of hand' please :D
Sounds like a duplication of costs there by using Neotel and having ADSL, but I don't know what your broadband bills or usage were/are like.

You'll need to get to grips with using ant1body's Route Sentry if u plan on using local b/w for games (such as BF2) which require authentication with international servers. Shouldn't be too hard to setup, I think there is a sticky thread on RS.

Even cod4 has to be authenticated from international servers and its working. I did ask they support and they said no they don't allow access to international servers at all.(openweb and axxess)
Hopefully bf2 and orange box will arrive this week and I will tell u if I can play on local only.

Unless u are on a network with other people that also use the web and that is to say if u can put your router in bridge mode. Such a pain with a telkom 105wr router so just created a pppoe dial up and it works like a charm and did not have to confic the router :)

Routesentry my friend!
I have been playing bf2 for over a year now on 384k using local only and an international acc to auth with.

The only problem i can for see with 384 gaming is that nobody can use the line when you game. I mean if someone goes on the net your ping spikes to like 500-600 which is annoying but if you can manage that you will be fine.

i have slow internet can anyone recommend a line for me please
What do you have at the moment, what is your budget, what area do u stay in, what will you be using your line for?

Oh, does this not happen with a 1mbps or 4mbps line? Was under the impression that was the case, if the account is shaped...
