SGS Owners: 3-button fix released for those lacking the feature

So what did you say about the R100 bucks :D

Hahahaha! Is it too late to retract the bet? :p

I checked the dump from my friend's phone - still reading U3"... So it might be that your phone was e-fused even before you applied the update. Only thing is, he's struggling to get back into recovery mode now. The first time after applying the update it booted flawlessly, but he hasn't been able to do it again since...

Mine still works though.

I feel damn lucky, couldv bricked it Phew

Does anyone else want to be a guinea pig?

Well, between me and D@rk_4ngel, lets see who takes the plunge first... :D

Almost did try the fix yesterday but started reading through the thread and got a little bad feeling and rather left it.. I did root and apply the OCLF lagfix though.. The plunge i will take if its guaranteed that it would work.. So far its a 50/50 chance of a brick or live... lol Not the best result for me! hahah

I have another friend with a SGS, but he forgot his usb cable at home.. Would like to see what his bml1 dump looks like.. He's looking for a cable now..

Looking forward to his results... I find it weird that there's only one confirmed U3" BML1 dump so far... Surely there should be more?

Got mine from vodacom, battery is dated 15/08/2010, with splashes on startup and shutdown. BML1 dump has U3.

Yours should be fine then. U3" in BML1 dump should work 100%...

Thanks, update.zip applied successfully. Phone went into recovery mode on first try of 3 button combo. Also, did a new dump and it's still U3.

Got mine from MTN. E-fused too :(

What does e-fused actually mean? Electronics (an expensive piece at that) and fused are not words that are nice to hear together...

An efuse is an electronic fuse build into the silicone chips, usually the cpu die. These are instructed to "blow up" by a resistor or some sort of code when you tamper with anything. In this case it looks like the bootloader or firmware.. Thats why you get your phone bricked when trying to load different firmware or a bootloader... Wow.. Now im really going to be careful with my phone.. ouch..

This type of lock down mechanism is also used in xbox 360's. It will render you xbox useless if flashing is done incorrectly or with the wrong version, coz it will blow all the fuses thats available.. Dono if it works in the same way on the SGS.. But i guess that is why its there for..

The droid-x is suffering from the same fate!

The eFuse is actually put there by Texas Instruments in all of their OMAP processors past and present because it's REQUIRED. The eFuse wasn't requested by Motorola.

So looks like the bastads who created the cpu's put it there! hahah

Soms say it doesnt really brick your phone but merely stops it from working until the proper "firmware/software" is loaded.. Guess this is how and why you can recover from some failed flashing by just loading the original firmware..

"In reference specifically to eFuse, the technology is not loaded with the purpose of preventing a consumer device from functioning, but rather ensuring for the user that the device only runs on updated and tested versions of software. If a device attempts to boot with unapproved software, it will go into recovery mode, and can reboot once approved software is reinstalled."

I think that is enough info.. Google.. :P

Guess that's why many people have to send in their phones to get the motherboard replaced after "hard bricking" their devices...

damn

i have

OXAJM1 CSC
XXJM1 PHONE/PDA
and it is e-fused. damn i cant believe this. this is international firmware.

Was about to sell my iPhone 3G, but after reading this crap, not sure I want a Galaxy S anymore.

I'll keep my iPhone 3G.

Damn just typed a long reply and it got lost when I submitted cos I was buffering a YouTube video. Damn Telskum 384 "fast broadband"

Thanks, I tried Google but only found the XDA posts. I know that some small embedded CPUs have fuse lock bits to do something similar but using this on a phone running an open source platform is just not cool. It's like Ford programming their motors to blow up if you put your own valves in. Voided warranty = irritating but understandable, self-destruct = disgusting ala Telkom.

So the score for e-fuse and U3 is what now?

Don't worry guys, I have a Vodacom firmware-branded phone with e-fused in BML1 dump and it worked. I'm guessing you should have the same luck as me... :)

Seems like vodacom did a good job in not completely killing our phone with the e-fused bml1. Will consider taking the plunge today and flashing the 3-button fix.. :)
