Shabir Shaik to be released today

Well, I was going to say that it wont be long before you see him wining and dining at all the finest places and there you have it.

I would also love to know exactly how many days he actually spent in a cell, and not in some cushy hospital bed.

The criminals are running our country now.

An interesting perspective following his application for medical parole last year which was turned down:

The Chairperson was adamant that the issue concerning medical parole should be dealt with and that one inmate should not be treated differently from the other inmates.

The Department explained that because of the definitional issues that they were having, this prohibited Mr Shaik from being considered for medical parole. These definitional issues also highlighted the policy gap that has become evident.

Correctional Services department says it will not deviate from the law, which provides for the release of only terminally ill prison inmates. The department remains adamant that only prisoners who are in their final stages are eligible for medical parole.

So either policy has changed conveniently since then, or Shabby is about to croak. Wouldn't be much of a loss, however I doubt he's on his way out. He suffered a minor stroke when he was admitted and has since stayed in hospital...

anyway from what i hear a person qualifies for medical parole only if they are terminally ill and are in the final stages of their lives (like have weeks to live). that person is released to die in some dignity and at home with their loved ones.

if shaik is being released it means he has weeks to live.
however if he's being released for political reasons (very likely) then they corrections dept has big problems. there are 1000's of terminally ill people in prison and i'm sure they will all be poised to have whatever shaik is having.

So we can then expect that 1000's of prisoners with AIDS will soon be released on parole.

If policy has been amended to allow Mr Shaik to leave, then yes. And this appears to be the case considering he was very recently turned down due to policy. So either he is just about to kick the bucket (was he going to testify against Zuma maybe?) or we are likely to see our prisons empty out somewhat....

We need to start watching out for terminally ill people then, seems they have a license to commit crimes now.
 
those with aids have more of a right to release than shaik.
so if shaik is to be released, surely what is good for the goose...

the dept of corrections had a big furore on their hands a few months back over a case of them not releasing people who had months to live. their reasoning was that they would rather err on the side of caution in case they release people & these people go on to recover. and in shaik's case it sounds like he only took ill once he saw the inside of a cell - and i imagine that is not unusual, hell i'd get real ill if i were ever thrown in jail.:D

What a joke this country is becoming. The message from the top is clear: rape, kill and plunder but don't worry if you are a comrade you will be excused.

Shaik is getting away with this and nothing the DA, ID, IFP, UDM, AZAPO, COPE do will change this, Shaik will soon be living the high life again and even become minister of finance.

The way I see it, the only way the ANC can be pressurised into sending Shaik back to jail is if South Africans join hands and go into the streets and strike. I firmly believe that strikes work, a lot of middle class people think strike actions are kinda barbaric especially if looting and violence come into the picture but I believe that strike actions work. I just wish there was a leader who can mobilise a lof of of people and go and strike because this Shaik being released is totally unacceptable. If Shaik is allowed to be free on "medical parole" then corruption will consume this country and a very strong message will be send to the rest of south africans that corruption and messing up our constitution is the way to go....

15 years for paying someone for a deal? what is the difference between that and taking him out on say a hunting trip its not bribing, nah I am not 100% convinced that he would belong in jail from the start.

If you accept that as normal you might aswell accept rape, torture, murder ect as normal. No morals in this country anymore?:confused:

To be honest with you, I agree with you that it is normal what Shaik did, business people bribe all the time even in the USA. But they bribe and they don't get caught, and if you get caught then you have to pay the price. These Enron executives who commited fraud got caught and they are paying the price, Shaik commited fraud, he got caught and he has ot pay the price, now if he is allowed to not pay the price then it means that bribery and fraud can be legalised because it doesn't help to have a law of something if you are not gonna pay the price once caught.
