Shamy vs Priest (healing)

my main is a priest atm and i really like shamy healing it just feels much nicer to me. and in our raid group we havnt got a shamy healer and we got 2 priest(me being 1 of them) so gear wise id get more. my shamy is still 71 though was wondering if anyone here is a resto shamy raiding hard modes... whats it like, mana wise, in aoe situations... fights like chimaeron?
 
Also have a priest main, but shadow only. I HATE healing with it, but I guess that's just me. Have a shammy who's dedicated resto, but unfortunately I can't give out any advice irt heroic mode healing because I stopped playing her with all the healing issues at the start of Cata and only focused on progressing my shadow priest now. Maybe someone else will care to comment.
 
Hey, I'm the healing officer of end game (heroic) 25 man raiding guild. I'm a resto druid myself, but I will give you my views.

Any fight where we are not to spread to much our Shammies does really good. Thou healing meters (wol) is not everything, it does tell a story. On our logs its usually me (resto druid) at the top with a shammy followed closely by Paladins, Priests, other shammies & other resto druids, but it does swop around depending on the fight. Some fights fav holy paladins, disc priests etc...
To me the value of a shammy is immense, aoe healing is great, totem is brilliant and mana tide is a must, specially new intense fights.

We used to have 2 really good shammies and all difficult fights I took to them if setup allows because, 1) they are really skilled 2) 2 x mana tides can have us really push the healing big time.
I can tell you from recruiting experience that any spec of Shammy seems to be few and far between (specially good ones) these days.
Its been the hardest class for us to keep at good numbers since the start of Cata

Resto shammy is also pretty easy spec to play and get really good output. I've head ppl complaining in the past that they are lacking behind other healers, but I guess that was before the 1st patch as I only see them doing really good in our raids.

On the other hand I have also had Resto shammies quit on me and rerolling as they did not enjoy the spec so much anymore (these are all old healers). Dunno what they would mean to you.

If I can get 2 more good Resto Shammies to add to my roster right now I would invite them asap :)
 
sounds like shammys in general are ok... also depends on fight i guess also if you are using healing assigns and what not. the only problem id have now is getting my shammy to 85 quick and gearing it up quickly for firelands.... cause my priest is 369 ilvl now almost full hc geared were currently 8/13 on hm progress... so the only thing bothering me is getting my shamy heroic mode ready... shouldnt be to big of a problem guild will jst have to take a week to gear me up in normal modes then i should be good enough for hm's
 
They all ok and all about the same just about. If you tired of one you'll be shortly tired of others also. (Druid, Priest, Pally here with low level shammy)
 
I play a resto shaman main in a 25man HC guild, and it is a lot of fun to play. I play a resto druid as well, and the shaman is by far a lot more fun to play. Throughput on the shaman is as good as any other healer, mana regen is far better than any other healer (imo at least). You also bring a lot of utility as a shaman with your totems being able to provide many of the buffs needed in a raided. Mana tide totem, this speaks for itself, it is awesome, the nerf coming with Firelands however is going to suck a lot. Spirit Link totem is an amazing cooldown also, if you enjoy rocking crazy high numbers on the meters, spirit link totem lets you do that :P

There were certain fights were shamans struggled a bit, but the way we scale with gear is amazing and it's sorted that out, for me at least. Chimaeron shamans are untouchable, you can spam the entire fight, completely rock the meters and not oom at all thanks to the pretty constant damage and Water Shield.

Also, if you're specced in Teluric Currents you can spam lightning bolts to regen mana, almost every fight this tier has places where damage taken is low, and there is little to heal, so plenty time to regen some mana.

The nice thing about a shaman is you can fill the spot of tank or raid healer efficiently. Both single target and aoe healing are good.

I have a shammy (enhancement) at lvl60 atm, and know absolutely diddly about healing. would it be a good time to start getting a healing set for dungeons and pvp? and possibly raids, as I dont see my future for my kitteh currently :(

If you're going to start healing, rather sooner than later imo. By the time you get to 85 you want to have good knowledge your class mechanics.

I'll admit reading the discussions around whether to spec into this or not have been very interesting
 
My 2nd shaman has been enhancement from 1-85. Slowly gathered some healing gear, and recently made resto my offspec. I had a basic idea of how to heal (my first shaman was raid healer in TBC), but it literally took me 2 normal 85 instance runs to get back into it: been spamming 'roics ever since! It's THAT easy.

If I didn't need to have a DPS off spec, as requested by our GM, even though I'm yet to use it :P I would honestly spec resto / resto. One spec being without Teluric Currents, as there are fights here and there where you just can't use it, Throne of 4 Winds, Omnitron, Twlight Ascendant Council, Valiona and Theralion.

However, with the nerf to Mana Tide coming with 4.2, I do believe this talent will become more and more useful.
