Shaped / Unshaped ADSL

Hello chaps :)

My previous post (New to ADSL) refers, please clear up this shaped/unshaped ADSL for me :).

Basically I only download via Rapidshare or any other file sharing service, absolutely no P2P or torrents. Would a shaped or unshaped account have a bearing on my downloads? I applied for a 4meg line today. I'm lost as to which ISP to use or package to get, some packages note 20% of IS and 50% of this and that :confused:

If I have to get an uncapped/unshaped 4meg account from axxess for R 496.00 would I still get about 100gigs a month (there about which I achieve with Neotel)?

Sorry guys a lot of noob questions but I've been in wireless land for a while :o

I have a 4mbs uncapped MWeb account (shaped) and i manage about 13GB a day...
the shaping isnt so bad, im donwloading a torrent at 300kb/s which is fast!
and most Http downloads are about 400kb/s for me...
steam and other priority sites are full speed at about 420kb/s...


Im not sure about the IS Axxess Uncapped deals, as some people are saying that they getting throttled to death after about 16GB which is utterly pathetic...
Go for mweb, if your really that worried about shaping, choose an internet Addict package from them, costs more - but unshaped...
 
Guys please help, as mentioned I don't do P2P or torrents & no online gaming. I only dload HD movies & series via Rapidshare, will my speeds drop due to shaping or totally disconnect?

I'm interested in an axxess account, I don't want to be tied to a contract.
 
It is better you Email Axxess or call and ask them these questions. Be careful though, if they use IS backbone(the worst in the country) you might have a lot more trouble then just shaping and disconnects. IS Sucks.

Thank you VioAdmin, I did call and he was a bit iffy and yes they use IS :(. So Axxess is out, pity Mweb is contract based :(
 
You can just sign a month-to-month contract with Mweb...

The problem is that you're going to be badly shaped as soon as you start to download excessively.

Pray tell how this works, I beg. I only download via Rapidshare or http using IDM, absolutely no torrents or P2Ps and I average about 100gigs with Neotel.

I've just decided to go with Mweb this very minute :)

Wait until MWEB disconnect you for "network abuse" that is right, the only uncapped service I know that you can use too much bandwidth on. *Spits*

Then again I doubt you will get a warning if you only use 100GB's a month. Personally though I am moving to Openweb
 
100 Gb is nothing on a 4mb MWEB uncapped package ....

Its simple If you want full speeds @ any time of the day or night pay for a UNCAPPED/UNSHAPED package (NOT A IS oNE )
If you would be downloading in the night and not in business hours Buy a standard uncapped pakkage again NOT A IS oNE ......

Go take a look @ mweb and openwebs ' gold pakkages... and remember if you are not satisfied you can change the next month ...

I am on Mweb 4mb uncapped standard (Never had problems with speeds / throttling and I do all my dl's via FTP /SFTP and sometimes http ) :)

Shaped uncapped DSL is fine, just unshape it if you're wanting to download Rapidshare or torrents. Instead of going for unshaped.
 
So far I've only heard of people getting cut off by Mweb if they download tonnes of stuff by evading the shaping they have in place. I'm pretty sure that if you manage to download 100-200GB per month on Mweb 4Mbps uncapped from HTTP/FTP sites that Mweb won't mind :)

You rent a VPS/Seedbox, like AeroVPS :)

Its a server, hosted overseas that has massive bandwidth that you can use to download torrents/news server files with and then you download those files from the VPS via HTTP which isn't shaped.
 
Nope rather not rent, but thank you for the reply Pada. So the consensus would be Mweb and that I should try to keep my dloads to about 200gigs else my speeds may drop.

Thanks man, going for the R 539 package. I only download @ night (work during the day). Besides Mweb comes in far cheaper if one compares the similar packages.
 
I doubt that your speed will decrease if you exceed 200GB, but that is still a massive amount of data to download in a single month...

Just for the record, Mweb is not contract based - you will only be forced to be in a contract if you order via Axxess which makes no sense. Mweb lets you go month - month meaning if you dont want it anymore, just cancel it and it will be gone next month.
 
... I've never understood how anyone can download over 50GB a month without doing something illegal... ;)

then again anyone know any quality LEGAL Movie download sites? (ooops thread hijack....)

nice ... And ja they are cheaper then other IsP's and speeds for me are gr8 never had any problems during work and non work hours (unless the prob is with seacom hahaha)

dude you can use alot of b/w without dling stuff (host stuff from PC , 24h HD video chat , PORN , youtube ect)
