Shaped vs Unshaped

He He Sorry

Sorry Echo, just lucky I guess, still think Telkom is ripping us off. My friend in UK has 1024 down and 512 up for 29 Pounds a month. I hate seeing the telephone bill always toooooooo much for sooooo little. Anyway Mweb can go get knotted. Even if I use all of my new 30gigs to inform the world of my addy change. I see lots of the Telscum guys as there is a box and DCS outside my house and they always are asking for work. Luckily we have a lot of contracts that need techs so I have a full house of good techs (I filter them of course)

Sorry but credit where credit is due, some of the techs work hard, but Telscum is still screwing us

and just by the by....in my case the tech who came to my place when it was installation time seemed like a truly hard working loving kinda guy(im sure most telkom techs are)
He seemed like a guy who deserves more than he gets from telkom...
I dont have much issues with techies its the policys from the coldrun of the witches

Thanks

Thanks friend ( I like to think I have friends?) :D

I have never worked for Hellkom, but have had to deal with them doing Pabx installations. You want ****, then try to get lines set up, lots of swearing!

Spent too many wasted hours (yes, hours) on the phone to get a hunting line working

Just to clear the shaped vs unshaped up a little ...

If you are a gamer and require low latency international connections (or low pings as it's commonly known), then unshaped is the thing for you.

Unshaped accounts are placed on an entirely different subnet and routed via the fastest international links.

An example to www.google.com

C:\>ping www.google.com

Pinging www.l.google.com [64.233.161.99] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 64.233.161.99: bytes=32 time=276ms TTL=243
Reply from 64.233.161.99: bytes=32 time=273ms TTL=243
Reply from 64.233.161.99: bytes=32 time=271ms TTL=243
Reply from 64.233.161.99: bytes=32 time=273ms TTL=243

Try the same ping with a shaped account and see the difference.

Not only is latency greatly improved, but P2P download speeds are far higher too.

In fact, saol.com are considering bundling a 30 Gig Shaped & 4 Gig Unshaped account into 1 package for the "super power gamer downloader" type users.

Will let you know in due course.

SHAPED PING:
Pinging www.l.google.com [64.233.161.104] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 64.233.161.104: bytes=32 time=357ms TTL=242
Reply from 64.233.161.104: bytes=32 time=358ms TTL=242
Reply from 64.233.161.104: bytes=32 time=348ms TTL=242
Reply from 64.233.161.104: bytes=32 time=359ms TTL=242

Thank you Stoke - now you can see the difference - unshaped is at least 30 % quicker.

Now, try the same ping tomorrow in peak hours and see the difference - unshaped will still remain consistent.

dont forget the mandatory R87 phone line rental

Already paying for line rental, so that's no extra to what I'm currently paying.

Yes, I understand now. But, unless you really need that extra speed, it's not really worth the huge difference in price is it?

All depends on what you require - apparently World of Warcraft users experience latency problems on shaped accounts and find the unshaped far superior.

If you're not a gamer or P2P freak - shaped account is definitely the way to go.

Well, I play games, but I'm in no way a serious gamer. My brother would probably play online when we get ADSL. But what effect does the latency problem have? Is the game almost unplayable? Or do you have to be an avid gamer to actually be affected by it?

I would start downloading movies quite a bit - that's one of the reasons I want to go for ADSL. But as long as it takes less than 12 hours to download a movie (700MB), I'm happy.

Just remember "unshaped" is better for International online gaming. For local a normal shaped account is perfectly fine.

What games would you like to play?
Popular games like Battlfield2, Counterstrike, UT2004, Nascar etc... has many local servers. Most online gamers in South AFrica join's local servers. the pings i get are around 35-45 for any game. So if you joining local for gaming, the performance is great.

Local should be fine, so there's no reason not to go for a shaped account for me it seems, so I guess that's what it will be. And besides, it's on a month-by-month basis, so I could always change over if it's not sufficient.

Thanks for all the help guys - you helped clear up a lot.

So it sounds like the Axxess 30GB (R350) connection with a 384KB line (R350) is the one to go for at a total of R700pm.

Hey, can't find that option on thier website... whats the link?
Is that shaped or unshaped?

Neither I'm afraid - its history. 26-07-2005 was a long time ago and there are no comparable packages available these days.

Sorry :o
