Is HSDPA/3G shaped?

If so what protocols are allowed?

Vodacom does not shape GPRS|EDGE|vanilla-3G|HSDPA, but you need to use the internetvpn or unrestricted APNs if you run into problems with the default NAT'ed internet APN.

Thanks IC, but could you elaborate on the bold sections of your post ;)

Best to search this forum for a thread called Unrestricted APN.

When Vodacom first launched 3G, Vodacom provided a default internet APN, which is NAT'ed and the customer ends up with a 10.x.y.z IP address, which usually causes problems with VPN connections and other stuff, so Vodacom introduced the internetvpn APN which is still firewalled [from outside of Vodacom's network - not necessarily from inside of Vodacom's network] but the customer gets a publicly routable IP address and is mostly able to use without problems but connections from the outside to an internetvpn APN IP address are blocked, so enter the Unrestricted APN which should allow unrestricted and un-firewalled access in both directions. It's a bit of a long story...

I should also mention that Vodacom does do custom APNs mainly for corporate customers wanting their own VPN...

As always impeccably correct...

I've read the Unrestricted APN thread, but as it stretches over several months, it is never clear on how one gets provisioned for the Unrestricted APN.

What is the current process? It doesn't seem to be an option on v4me.

There are a few pre-requisite requirements:
  1. First see if the internetvpn APN does the trick - call 155 to get this activated on a data enabled SIM card
  2. If the internetvpn APN does not solve the problem - e.g. allowing incoming connections from say ADSL to a Vodacom connection, then registered card carrying members of this forum are allowed to p.m. v3g to request being provisioned - a temporary exclusive offer to MyBroadband members...:D

I might just keep it an exclusive...;) It's a dangerous apn to just give out.

It's important to understand what you want to do before just switching APN's.

99.99% of all apps will work on the internet apn.

The internetvpn apn is only if you have a big problem with NAT'ed IP's. Most modern VPN clients don't have this problem anymore.

The unrestricted apn is when you need to connect INTO the 3G network and is a specialist apn. For example it opens you up to port attacks and you pay for the privilege!

So try to stay on the internet apn. It has all the fancy stuff on it to make your browsing as fast as possible. The others don't.

Due to the unfirewalled bidirectional access via. the unrestricted APN you will also be required to sign a document which states that you understand the risks of using the unrestricted APN.

Exactly, that's why we pulled the on-line provisioning. We don't want people to willy-nilly provision themselves and then complain later that Vodacom did not protect them when they get attacked by malware.

So only use the unrestricted apn when you need to, and when done, switch back to the internet apn.
