Shared and dedicated hosting pricing comparison

I use Circle (www.circle.co.za) for my shared hosting. Their prices are very competitive and the service that I have received is very good.

I got the ASP.NET one with SQL 2005/2008 1GB disk space for only R79 p/m.

I also use Circle for my ASP hosting and Axxess for everything else. Must say I am surprised not to see Axxess listed in that article.

When it comes to the article, the writer could have at least bothered to do some basic math to keep everything on a simple playing field, for example:

Hetzner - R5.00 per 10mb
WebAfrica - R5.00 per 10mb

nb, R0.50 per mb = R5 per 10mb

So when comparing these 2, they're exactly the same except you'll get 750mb less disk space and 2gb more bandwidth for R1 extra with Web Africa.

Why can you apply rpm's little mathematical equation do the whole deal? In fact, I haven't seen that used since the first or 2nd time doing ADSL comparisions a few years back??

Locally hosted? Because AFAIK they're not locally hosted...

This is why I don't host in SA. We have a dedicated server in the UK costing us less than R 900 a month and includes 250 GB space and no limit on bandwidth.

My personal shared host in the US costs me a mere R 110 per month and provides me with 25 GB space and 250 GB bandwidth.

Good point. Is this news article refering to Local or International hosting prices? Can't see that in the article.

Ps. Axxess do offer local hosting - http://www.axxess.co.za/localhosting.php

Afrihost and Hetzner South Africa only hosts locally. So I assume local hosting. Just another point (including your little link) re: the trend MyBB is following... guess it's only Major mom & pop operations these days... huh rpm?

would it not also be helpful to include domain setup and registration fees in that matrix?

Don't register your domains through your host as you will always pay more and sometimes they register it in their name which can be a pain when you want to move. Use a service like Powerpipe and maintain control over your own domains. If you're looking for a co.za you can register this on your own too for a cheap R 50 a year.

I thought Mybroadband was built on smaller mom & pop operations. Would not have grown without having them support the advertisement for this site :p

most technical people register their domains directly, but the kind of people who would find this comparison useful probably don't want to know about nameservers and don't have the time to faff around ;)

True, just thought I'd share as I've seen some hosts charge R 300 for co.za registration!

Telkom prices...they're smoking their socks...really!!! Shocking prices...but I'm not surprised.

You assume wrong.

Hetzner also host in Germany.
In Germany - Disk is the same but bandwidth usage a fraction of the local price.

My experience with Hetzner is that they are not Mom and Pop

What I don't get is how the hell can they offer 250MB hard disk space and keep a straight face --- what a joke! Are they on crack? Why does SAn hosting suck as much as it does? I can understand why bandwidth would be more expensive, of course, but why is hard disk space so limited? Hard disk space is cheap --- why not use it to differentiate your offerings? Instead it's as if they try segment the market by making decent hard disk space some kind of "premium" thing. I host overseas for everything possible. I also recently tried one of the WebAfrica Windows hosting packages and had other problems with it that made me think "how ridiculous", e.g. their MySQL database was INCREDIBLY slow, and also had extremely limited access rights, I could not even execute a 'load dumpfile' --- wtf? It's like hosting in a straightjacket, you can't do anything. Compare to super-cheap overseas Linux hosting where you often get SSH access too.
