I have tenants in a flat on my premises, who would like their own broadband internet access. I was thinking upgrade the line to 4MB, route a wire from the wall socket to the flat, they get their own router and username.

Will this work if I want to play games online and they DL e-mail and view Spacebook?

It'll work but you can't have 2 ADSL routers on the same line, you'd have to get a normal network router like a WRT54G and assuming your router supports half bridge mode they could connect through that with their own username and password. Obviously it could make your games lag if you don't run some sort of QOS.

Syndyre, another problem: the wireless reception is not that good in my house now I have to get it to the flat with a good signal. That is another R1k or more to get a repeater. Maybe I must suggest to them to get 3G or iBurst, or something from Neotel.

How far is it? You could always run cable but obviously that could be a bit of a mission. If its for their benefit though then they should pay for whatever you do I suppose. So give them the option and see what they want to do.

Are there any free QOS programmes available for private/non-profitable companies?

Sounds to me like more trouble than its worth, id say go 3G rather than let them fiddle with your line

Or they should get their own ADSL line for the flat.

Then there is the problem of the 0+4 connection at the telephone pole. Will this cause trouble for my ADSL connection?

Im sure you can get 2 ADSL lines on the same phone line, I dont think there would be an issue with the pole or your line.

Otherwise they could also apply for their own phone line, thus allowing them to apply for thier own ADSL.

You can get a router that supports DD-WRT firmware and then use that for QOS. The software's free, the router's obviously not.

We had an issue with dail-up when there was a 0+4 connection. The flat had a land line, thus the 0+4 connection. The dail-up speed with the thing was 16kbps, after Telscum removed the thing it was 50.6kbps.

This was many moons ago before ADSL was available for everyone in SA. I just don't want to sukkel with Telscum again.
