Heya. Anyone have some advice/ideas on how i could get something roughly 2Gb to a buddy across local traffic? Was thinking FTP but never done it and it would seem logical that where would be some DNS issue connected to that. Thx for the help :D

And if you're not going to mail it , i suggest you break it up. Most ZIP/RAR can do it for you, it's usually called "span multiple discs" . I'd break it into maybe 100MB pieces. That way, its' not an entire 2GB that fails, only 100Mb.

Obviously whoever downloads it , need to combine them again on the other side, but at least you'd only need to re-download a 100MB piece if something goes wrong.

It's cheaper to put it on a DVD and mail it.

Lol knew someone would say that. Nah we both have tons of local BW left and it would take 2-3 days for the disc to get there, so trying to get a solution that could work.

Yep, thanks for tip. Been sharing up and down forever - just never attempted it with local bandwidth.

Send the DVD in an overnight courier bag = R52 rand.... cheaper than one Gig of Bandwidth.

We already both have 30Gb's local we are stuffing around with. Not being greedy seeing as R52 isnt alot of money but thinking why pay at all when it could be done for free.

Set up home FTPs.
Was thinking the same thing - any good guides going around? Will run a search anyway.

dc plus plus.
use apex.
Any server suggestions? Or are u suggesting to do a server client setup locally with just the 2 of us? mmm

Bulletproof FTP server to set up the FTPs is pretty easy.

Then register a host name on www.no-ip.com and get the No-IP DUC (dynamic update client) which automatically updates your IP/host details. Might only work with international bandwidth though, in which case the FTP addresses would be your IP addresses.

Option 56 is setup a WAN between you two with a VPN.
You'll still need a fixed means of identifying each other on the internet though, so, get PostmanPot's suggestion working first.

Wait ... PostmanPot ... will your suggestion work on local-only?

I don't think the dynamic IP/host updating will work. But it will work if the IP addresses are used. Just update the other PC if you get disconnected and get a new IP. :D

Most ISP's provide a form of DNS allocation as follows:
- Take the first part of your ISP login. e.g. [email protected], take the online1146967 part.
- Append .domain.name onto the end. Becomes : online1146967.domain.name

The online1146967.domain.name is then always going to be the domain name.

But ... does Telkom implement this?
Anybody with a Telkom account willing to try?
I don't have a working Telkom account right now.

I suspect that if Telkom do have this facility that the domain.name part would be telkomsa.net.

setting up an ftp site is a breeze. Just go to dyndns.org and register yourself a free account, put the details into your router and download filezilla server, and off you go.

wouldnt it be easier to create a torrent?
Where do you host the torrent?
How do you prevent everybody else from connecting to you?

Im not that clued up on how torrent file creation itself works or the workings other than the download part but to add to the idea mayb just mail the torrent file? Or does the problem arise with the tracker bit?

Set up a local server with ptokaX just for the two of yous.

Server software:
http://www.ptokax.org/

Apex DC++:
http://www.apexdc.net/

It's really easy :p

Sound almost to easy to be true - will give it a go together with the other suggestions anyway and see how it fares. Thx for the tips Keep.
