Hi,

Is it legal / allowed for us to purchase one uncapped ADSL account, and use it both at work and at home, as well as at my parents place.

Is there any legal problem with this? Is there any restriction to the number of routers that can log on at once??

Otherwise surely you would be able to share one account between load s of people? Or am I missing something simple?

Thanks

Richard

Hey Richard

Thank your for your interest in Uncapped technology.

The Uncapped accounts allow for only 1 concurrent connection, thus you will not be able to connect more than 1 ADSL line at a time.

In some cases, two connections will be permitted, but it is not for the purposes of sharing, but for the cross over between one IP address and another.

It would be unwise for ISP's to allow more than 1 concurrent connection per account.

I hope this information will be usefull :)

Kind regards
MrBEEP

There is no legal problem I would think but the account will almost certainly only allow 1 concurrent log on so it would not work.

[edit: Mr Beep got to it before me]

Unless u link up all ur pcs with wireless or wire, forming a lan then connecting to the uncapped account with one router

That would work if ur work pc, ur pc and parent's pc are in one complex of course :D

Our ISP supplied us with a Cisco router, preprogrammed so all we needed to do was to plug it into the ADSL line and be up and running without having to enter any username/password stuff.

Think they did it to prevent "sharing" of the uncapped account.

I don't mind using a Cisco router as it's a lot better than the dinky macaroni routers Telkom usually supplies... :D

They can block concurrent connections on their side, not on client side equipment...

Did they provide you with the admin password for the router?
Have they blocked ports so you can run no servers, or VPN tunnels, or even *gasp* P2P?

That is often what they do, depends on the account..

Well if there were no limits on concurrent connections, the whole of SA would run off 1 uncapped account for around 5c per month.

In the early days of 3GB accounts only and with no concurrent connection limitations, a bunch of guys got together and bought 30 3GB accounts, then seeing as Telkom only calculated usage at the end of each day, they would each max out the same account on one day then switch to the next one the next day. Great idea :D They raped something like 140GB almost every day... probably more.

just plug in a wireless router into the uncapped cisco router and share the account with friends and neighbours :)
I do this with my works VPN Cisco router. Works like a charm.

(I dont share it with friends and neighbours, but I do have a wireless router sending the connection to my pc upstairs, incase my boss reads this)

The problem is that you aren't sharing your account, you're sharing your line.

When they download it's going to kill your speeds and pings. On a 4mb line its not a bad idea though, as long as you don't want to do any hectic gaming.
