Sharks coach John Plumtree believes that most of the teams in the opening round of this year's Super 15 tournament are not playing at the standard of previous years - yet.
Plumtree's Sharks were one of the lacklustre performers in round one with a 24-9 victory over the Cheetahs played in wet and humid conditions in Durban.
But the Currie Cup-winning coach expects that the overall standard of the competition will improve as teams settle and conditions become cooler.
"We're still a little bit off the pace, but with what I saw in the opening round - with the exception of the Waratahs - I think everyone is still a bit off the pace and off where they want to be," Plumtree said.
"But everyone will get better and there is lots of good rugby still to watch. We have a really big opportunity against the Blues [on Saturday], so it's about looking forward, I guess.
"When conditions make it difficult to play a certain style, you have to get points some other way; you need to be efficient and we got that bit right.
"Against the Cheetahs we couldn't counter-attack so we had to kick for space and defend a lot. It was quite hard work to get anything positive going."
The Sharks have a couple of injury concerns, with flank Jacques Botes nursing a bruised hip and scrumhalf Charl McLeod having a slight hamstring niggle.
Skipper John Smit is also in a race against time to be fit for the Blues match while wing JP Pietersen should be over a hamstring strain.
"Smitty only has a Grade-one calf injury so we'll be working hard to get him back this week," Plumtree said.
"If not, then he we will available for the Force. It all depends on how quickly he heals. JP has a good chance of making it for the Blues game."
