Sheldean's body found

What happened to little Sheldean Human, is tragic, and my condolonces go out to her family.

But it is a sad indication of our society, when Sheldean gets so much publicity when there are so many thousands of missing children, why was this case so special that it got more publicity than the rest, what of the thousands of parents out there praying for the return of their children, and no newspaper, or TV station thinks to put their childs pic out there, and why do the police not do as intensive investigations in other cases as they did in this one ?

I suppose you want someone to say because she is white? Come on! Stop nitpicking :(

Yeah I agree something bad should happen to the killer, like losing his manhood and bleeding to death, or give him to a lion to be eaten alive.

And the worst thing of all is....

On the news at 6 last night they said that the girl's body has been found - and then around 9 last night they had one of those missing children ads on SABC asking for anyone who might have seen her.. Come on that's very rude of SABC to show that ad after her body has been found...

@blonde one ( using this post to answer you )

How many other children were on that ad and got nowhere near the attention Sheldean got

No this ad was just about Sheldean no other children where on there. If the ad was about a couple of children that would not have been that bad. Even still if her body has been found and they had it on the news at 6 ... 3Hours to edit their ads is more than enough time...

SABC sucks for show that ad about her after the body has been found....

There's your answer. Perhaps this has received attention it has as it's a heinious crime! Does there have to be any other reason?

condolences to the family...

however
According to the Pretoria News dated Monday, 27 March 2006 - " Two children on average go missing in Tshwane every day…" that is approximately 60 children per month in only one of our cities - what would it be if we had to account for the whole of South Africa? Police statistics have indicated, "130 children under 18 were reported missing the first two months of this year…."
gotten off k-i-d-s.co.za
how much media attention do these kids get? how often is a "top cop" brought in to solve the case?

Firstly my apologies, I thought it was one of those ads where they have a number of missing children on

Sheldean's case received the attention when she was still missing, no-one knew that a heinious crime ( besides her abduction ) had taken place - now I ask again what of the other children who are still missing - where is the public outcry, the media attention, the concerted police action, for them

to be honest, I think it is because she is white, if anybody knows any other reason why Sheldean's case received so much attention, let me know, so that my faith in society can be restored or I have to continue believing that in South Africa, a white life is valued more than a black life

Then the fact that her alleged murderer is a white man should help restore your faith in society (whatever that means..)

Sheldean's case did receive attention and possibly it's because someone simply latched onto the case or maybe the parents had cash to help with promotion. Guess you'd have to ask the family.

To be honest, I don't think it is because she was white. How can you sit there and turn the brutal murder of a little girl into a racial thing? Who gives a crap why she got so much attention?

Yes it sucks the other kids don't get equal attention but instead of playing the race card again and again how about doing something to help?

well dude, I wasn't personally involved so can't comment on the exact facts, but AFAIK the whole community where she lived was rallied up to look for her, even one of local radio stations contacted, and broadcast it.
this wasn't just another statistic, or small print ad in paper, which most people don't see or hear. Her people stood together to try and find her, and made such a big issue of it, people all over Pretoria were looking out for her, I think that was the difference, that made the media give it so much more publicity.
Maybe, especially in these times, we all fear for our little kids, and when someone in our community, black or white, loses a child, we all feel it, ... black or white's got nuthin to do with it.
I'm sure if more parents with lost children made such a huge thing about finding their just lost kids, there would be similar community & countrywide media coverage....

That's what I am trying to do, by asking the question, if there were more attention given to other children than maybe there would be less than two a day taken from Tshwane

It is a blatant fact that this case was because she was white - the family had no money for promotion - It is the sad reality of South Africa that her life is valued more than any of the others

how can you sit there and lament the loss of Sheldean, and not spare a thought for the lives of the thousands of others

It is a blatant fact
Really? Gosh the definition of fact must be pretty loose in your world. Where I come from a fact is:

"a statement or assertion of verified information about something that is the case or has happened;"

So I'd go so far as to say your "fact" is merely the wanderings of your own mind.

I lament the loss of Sheldean and I lament the loss of every other child or person who is killed by some fracker who doesn't deserve to live. You feel so much about it, rally your people, contact the govt/police and force them to do more about it. But don't play the race card simply because it's the easiest thing to do in this country.

The race card is not being played, this is simply a reflection of the attitude of our society, I felt the same way about how the Leigh Matthews case was handled

Her parents are very poor... they are about 40 people living together in a commune.

Maybe its because the mom went to BEELD the day Sheldean went missing and the cops didnt want to help her!!

Thanks, that's the explanation I wanted, and I missed CeeBee's post before, that explains why it got the coverage it did, and nullifies my other posts, my faith in society is restored

Still wish more could be done to stop this scourge though

In South Africa alone, around 800-900 children are reported missing to law enforcement agencies each year; however, the actual figure is probably significantly higher. Similarly, the annual figure of 5,000 reported cases of rape and sexual assault of children is undoubtedly underestimated. Child protection services estimate that in South Africa, one in three girls and one in five boys suffer sexual exploitation in one form or another. Furthermore, over 2,000 children are murdered each year in South Africa.
