Shell all set to spend R1.6bn on fracking

Johannesburg - Shell has indicated it is likely to spend about R1.6bn on the exploration of shale gas in the Karoo as cabinet looks set to give the green light to the removal of the fracking moratorium, according to an article in Business Report.

Shell SA general manager Jan Willem Eggink reportedly told the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry that the company would spend R1.6bn should cabinet give the go-ahead.

But cabinet spokesperson Jimmy Manyi said a report by the department of mineral resources had not been discussed by the cabinet on Tuesday.

Energy Minister Dipuo Peters has repeatedly voiced support for fracking. Last month, Peters said concerns about fracking needed to be overcome through research and technology.

"We cannot allow a blessing to lie fallow... If shale gas is one of the blessings, we are going to go for it," Peters said.

Cape Town Chamber of Commerce president Michael Bagraim said in the report that the government needed to allow for more time to consider the pros and cons of fracking.

“We don’t want to get into the green versus the big business debate,” Bagraim said.

Fracking involves pumping a mixture of water, sand and chemicals at high pressure down a borehole into the rock strata containing the shale gas.

The process releases the gas, which flows out of the borehole to the surface, where it is captured.

The area is subject to an astronomy law that prohibits activity interfering with star gazing, which could include hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking" - where drillers blast large amounts of sand and water laced with chemicals deep underground to free natural gas and oil from shale deposits.

I ask again... how will it interfere with stargazing?

Also, fracking can be done without chemicals.
 
they have been buttering up all the municipalities for a while now. expect a positive result when voting rolls around.

Proof? Also that not saying that they will go the root without chemicals.

I really hope a certain company I know gets to do the environmental damage report on this before the go ahead, fracking will be banished from South Africa forever and the government can do squat.

+1 This is bad news if it goes ahead. Saw Gasland and I was shocked.
 
I haven't seen gasland, but I've heard about stuff like tap water being set on fire.

That's what happens when your borehole runs through four coal seams though...?

Poverty would be the least of their problems if (it will) those chemicals get into the communities local drinking water, that will kill any hope of food production and the medical clinic will be over whelmed. Those small dorpies in the Karoo are going to suffer the most and it would even clause some to turn into ghost towns because the toxic water will kill any form of farming.

I had to do a full in depth case study on fracking and let me tell you, the only people that is going to benefit from this is shell. No it will not lower any prices of any fuel in this country because the gas is most likely going to be exported.
 
600 million for the fracking - 1 billion in bribes ............ or have I got it the other way round ?

Yep, this is pretty common with mining (mostly coal mining) activity. Not really sure why fracking gets singled out.

You used to be able to get the same effect in a bunch of town in Mpumalanga: Witbank, Ermelo, Secunda, etc. Not sure if it still happens because most potable water is piped from dams on the Vaal now.

Name one govt initiative which has alleviated poverty in our communities.

This is 100% about lining the elite's pockets.

I'm amazed there are still those who think the govt give a continental toss about the poor masses one day after an election.
 
I am very much against Fraking, especially in a place like the Karoo.. its too ecologically sensitive for this kind of thing.
