Shocking stats about SA's Internet quality

Shocking? That didn't shock me, i already knew this. How about a latency graph, to show how crap that is as well.

That average download speed is less that 0.5Mbps? I don't believe it.

EDIT: Oh, less than 0.3Mbps...

That is fine giving the stats but why is this happening ??

I agree with this report.

The decline is evident. I assumed I'm being throttled. My WebAfrica MyBoradband 30GB ADSL seems to be running through the oldest most dilapidated servers ever since they moved to IS. When you phone the SP the fault lies with Telkom. When you phone Telkom the fault lies with the SP. Ping-pong.

The 3G/HSPA situation is very similar. No matter where I go or which network I use these days there is the one or other excuse for poor reception. I always seem to stay in an area with some kind of problem.

I've given up. It just pushes up my blood pressure when I have to struggle with a call centre. One has to make do because it is like scaling Mount Everest to get decent service these days.

You have to ask?

Telkom can be blamed for this, introducing VDSL when it's been available in overseas markets for over 5 years and is being replaced already by FTTH and they don't have any concrete plans to deploy FTTH on a large scale currently.

Charging ridiculous prices for landline/adsl rental, IPC prices, terrestrial network bandwidth prices (It costs more to transmit data across Telkom's terrestrial network than it does to transmit data overseas), no LLU, no competition, etc etc etc

But what about the report that SA's quality compares favourably to the rest of the world on certain metrics. Or was that report more or less like Josuub's statements that SA's mobile data prices are some of the lowest in the world? You can't trust what come's out of these insider's mouths it seems.

The M-Lab data shows that South Africa’s average download speed peaked at 0.51Mbps in December 2012, and has steadily declined to its current level of 0.33Mbp
That's as a result of increased penetration without increased infrastructure. Simple. More people on the web but the backbone stays the same.

South Africa is in big trouble in regards to the internet. Unless drastic measures are taken, this is one technology that will just simply die a quiet death in future in this country.

Unless you have used the Internet in countries such as the US, anywhere in Europe, UK, Japan or Korea, you don't really know what the Internet is and what it can offer. You are just used to the little bit of scraps South Africa has to offer to users.

yes because the execs at the ISPs are always in it just for the money, and f**K the subscribers/users. They will rather enrich themselves with new Lambos than set aside funds for backbone infrastructure upgrades. Telkom is where they learn this!!!! Its 100% true to the core Telkom mentality!

This is why we pay our arses off for a diginet line and even that is useless when it comes to having a huge chunk of cable stolen.

Uhmmm How can ISP's be blamed for the failure of ICASA and LLU? Its like blaming a driver for a bumpy ride which are due to the shyte condition of the road he has to drive on...

DOC: Maybe it's time for a colloquium, invite some telecoms players, have some tea and cake and discuss how we will solve this by 2020.

LLU is not the issue at hand... the problem occurs at the backbone level, and more recently, in the exchange!
I moved away from Cybersmart, a normal ISP, because of their quality of service and latencies

It will all come right when we have a DA President and cabinet, in 20XX...
