I avoid mails at all costs. I only go to the smaller shopping centres unless I really have to. It's not as hard as you think.

I have no desire to fight the masses at one of these supermalls

I have multiple layers of security on my property, those layers are not impenetrable but they do act as an early warning system with enough time to get ready.

If you don't have any form of early warning and you think having your loaded firearm under your pillow is your only line of defence, you're doing it wrong, especially when your kids start playing with that loaded firearm because you keep it under your pillow instead of in a proper safe.

Companies tend to be scared when a bunch of people get together on social media sites to clobber a company they don't like, as a result of that corporate fear there are many social media campaigns that have successfully brought about change for far less important issues than forcing shopping mall management companies to actively prevent armed robberies and shootouts in crowded shopping malls.

Simply threatening a mall stay-away on social media could be enough to force a specific shopping mall management company to actively prevent future armed robberies and shootouts in a crowded mall.

The amount of rent money that shops in malls pay to those shopping mall management companies is huge, and shop owners surely expect proper security in exchange for that rent/protection money.

I have just come from there. Everyone was trapped for two hours. I always felt safe there. No more.
I heard 3 gunshots.

Sadly, this can happen anywhere.

A few years ago I was stuck in Irene Mall when they had an armed robbery at the MTN. I was in PnP and we weren't allowed out of the shop until it was safe.

It's the sorry state of affairs we're in due to fearless criminals as who's going to stop them? The fat police that have no respect for their job? Or the courts that give 6 years for murder?

SA is a mess.

The news article suggests that the civilian started the gunfire as the three robbers were already "fleeing", and implies that there had been no exchange of gunfire up to that point in time.

If that is accurate, the civilian basically put the lives of everyone else at risk and is not a hero, more like a moron with a firearm, and ironically he no longer has his firearm as the robbers stole that from him to use in another robbery.

It would be slightly different if the robbers were already firing, or if the civilian was actually an off duty cop, however the lives of innocent civilians would still be at risk from stray bullets even if this happened in a parking lot instead of inside the crowded shopping mall.

That said, I would expect the same reckless response if shopping mall security were armed.
