by "these people" you referring to the criminals, right ?

That is such a racially charged question that you are obviously looking for a fight to start off your Tuesday morning. Hence I shall only say this I imply criminals and that is all if you want to see something else then that is your failing as a South African to not seeing past colour in every issue that is raised.

Then why would people allow criminals to roam their hoods during a certain time of the day and then forbid them "after a certain time" ?

Because under cover of darkness they do what they want undetected, and there are no garden boys and house cleaners walking the streets at night. I thought this would be obvious.

I am not offended, and this shooting did not affect me in any way. You are entitled to your opinion, and to question others' opinions. :)

Yes I grew up in a white neighbourhood and as such it was a lot safer than perhaps what you grew up in. However I have seen what a safe neighbourhood can be how can we not apply it to all neighbourhoods black, white or colored. The issue I have is that two thugs were walking around in my neighbourhood at 2:45AM with firearms looking for a fight. The police spotted them pulled over to ask a few questions and promptly got taken out. Both have been shot in the head one of them a reservist not even a full time police officer. This is the issue, the criminals should FEAR the police and in turn we should RESPECT what they do on a daily basis.

Agreed that the cops should be respected.

On a similar note - my colleague's husband was coming out of the gym at Plattekloof last Thursday and was filling up at the Engen garage, when he had 4 black guys jump him and hijack him.

They drove him into Gugulethu and were beating him the whole trip there and then stopped and sat around a camp fire getting high and kicking the **** out of him. 4 hours later, they decided they wanted to go for a drive and told him to start the car and drive them as they were too high (reponsible thugs  )

At this point, he realised that he may have a way out - the car he has is a two-door and when pressing the immobolizer once, only the driver side door will unlock. Luckily he was still at his senses and used this chance to jump in the car, start it up and drive off as they were hanging on the car trying to stop him from getting away.

How he managed to get out of Googs - only he knows - sheer adrenaline.

So ja, Bothasig, Plattekloof - nowhere is really safe nowadays.
Be vigilant and keep yourself and your family secure at the end of the day.

You see, this is terrible. And unfortunately, 99% of these incidents involve black people from informal settlements, and they are the ones who tarnish the image of the black people NOT involved in any illegal activity. :( By this I am saying that by no means are all black people criminals and thugs, it is just that almost every incident of housebreaking, murder, robbery and hijacking involves gangs of blacks. This makes people's comments to news events sound racially charged, IMO.

I think it was stats from last year that placed bothasig the safest suburb in Cape Town.
It's just scary to think that I was coming home from my girlfriend that night, wrong place wrong time and who knows what might of happened.

Look, its crazy. I am black and I also feel pretty uneasy when walking past other black dudes at night. I hate thinking about whether I am about to get mugged or if the other black dude coming my way is also thinking I might just mugg him..

Its a sick feeling and I agree with Slootvreter, it always ends up sounding like its racial even when its not.

I have been robbed at gunpoint and hence I tend to scan the areas around me this days and there are just certain places I refuse to visit.

The sad reality is that these days nowhere, and no-one is safe.

Formerly "safe" neighborhoods are targeted not only at 2am, but 2pm, in broad daylight, during school holidays.

The west beach / sunningdale resident who was shot in the head for a phone and his car keys a few weeks ago, and further back the man walking his dog close to the bridge on blouberg road who was stabbed for R50 and his cellphone.

As in this case with this cop car being found outside Dunoon, once they disappear into the informal settlements our understaffed police force have their hands tied. Keep patrols going in the neighborhood, or pursue the criminals elsewhere.

I cant recall when last i actually walked somewhere from my home, it just does not happen anymore. Even in public places filled with people, i still scan groups for people who look suspect, don't think a large group cant be held at gunpoint and robbed.

Paranoia comes standard.
