Shoprite and Checkers allow QR code payments

Shoprite Group’s customers can now pay for groceries with their mobile phones as the retailer said it continues to find new ways to keep its stores, customers and employees safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The food retailer said QR payments will be available at the tills in all Shoprite, Usave, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores within the next two months.

Will they wash their phones after handling it?

I know after this pandemic slow down economy will be very bad, but I think if businesses keep recent innovative solutions they implemented during pandemic South Africans will benefit from this crisis
For example if innovative solutions is roll out to all 9 province's at once this is way better than rolling out services in phases where small provinces sometimes don't get anything

This is nice, but why the hell have they gone the opposite way of every other major retailer and disabled tap to pay?

First they refused to let me pay with my watch, and shortly after that tap to pay was disabled in every branch I went to.

Innovative? No.

With tap to pay you still have to enter your PIN for amounts more than R200, which means touching the sticky rubber keypad of the payment terminal.

Chances are they will allow Samsung Pay as well, but don't try and use your watch, unless you are prepared to try and explain how NFC/MST works to every cashier.

Hmm but it count as online spend or checkers spend is the big question.

Definitely woud want clarity on this.

And then, back in the day, places that had zapper had a manager that would receive the sms when the payment comes through. I'd be very surprised that this is integrated into POS, so Im keen to know who will get the sms.

For 15% back in ebucks :p

for other retailers its awesome as it counts as online vs instore.. (not sure if new rules still have this as better). I reckon MasterPass should be promoted as a payment method of choice though as it promotes better security (unless u use your phone badly .. i.e. not password protected etc though with MasterCard pass through i have to wonder on costs)

You guys missed Virgin Money Spot as an option for paying at Checkers, also shows a QR (WiCode).
