If the government really wanted to get rid of fireworks going off in suburbs, then the best way would be to organise some proper fireworks shows around the country.
This used to be a thing at one of the PNPs 'back then' in my area. I'm quite sure the same at the voortrekker monument. Nowadays not so much...

I lost interest in fireworks when I was 12.

They are a nuisance and pointless, IMO. Ban away.

Wholesale slaughter
That you find the death of harmless animals entertaining is disturbing, to say the least.

I would invite you to volunteer some time at a local rescue shelter and observe, first-hand, the impact this idiotic practice has. If you're still laughing afterwards... well... that's interesting as well.

Other , ban the big bangers for public purchase and only allow them for dedicated displays , keep the low noise, no bang fireworks for public purchase.
There are more than enough little to no noise fireworks that can give amazing displays , and yet arent noise pollution.

Oh, it's that time of the year again. Wait a minute, has Diwali passed already and the Indians gotten off scot free?

Not yet boet. I have a case of the loudest bangs available and I am going to scare the bejeesus outta all my neighbours. I totally avoid light-type fireworks and only let off loud bangs just to troll them. You should stop by for a dop and skop.

I direct you back to your phrase, you said wholesale slaughter, as if you are referring to the Salem witch trials with animals, that's not what's happening here, some casualties occur yes, but this is much more the fault of the owners or the lack thereof than not. I think what you are looking to crucify is the human, which unfortunately is higher up on the food chain, you'll have to find some other way to deal with it.

That would cost them money, and reduce, the amount they could pocket.

I'll bring the whisky.

I still have some bangs from a couple of years back. Fck, those things blow a hole in the lawn.

I remember going to a few firework shows at a pic n pay in Cape Town as a kid. Wouldnt be able to tell you which one but there was a pretty big field next to it where we would sit. Probably was a hyper.

So not only do you endorse the wholesale slaughter of animals for your own amusement, you've directly, even proudly, contributed to the deaths of millions.

This is an interesting tactic..... which speaks volumes about our species.
I'm sure there's a pro-veggie thread here somewhere for this post? Anyway, back to my beef sausages...
