Should I bail?

This is quite an iffy question and you have to choose for yourself if you think it's a good idea or not.

A few years ago I worked in a big corporate environment which is what I thought I wanted. The team I worked with were world class from a knowledge/skill perspective as well as being genuinely awesome people. Unfortunately I found that career advancement would be too slow. Because it was a corporate environment most increases were capped at 8% max for excellent performance which just wouldn't cut it. By far the best place I've ever worked and hated to leave but opportunities are opportunities.

The job I moved to was more money but was miserable and the people I worked with were a bag of ****s (mostly the management). I hated every day I was there from 2 weeks in and it made me a miserable person and even affected my personal life. I left and started a better job beginning of last year and things have been great since.

Either way it may work out terribly or it may work out really well. However, I don't regret making the moves I have as at the end of the day I'm not afraid to say that (a) I trade my time for money so it's in my best interest to maximise the amount I get and if I can fast track myself to being financially free I will, and (b) I enjoy the type of work I do but there's no reason not to make my hobby worth my while if I can.

For the first time in my career i actually felt sad about resigning. The company is really great, but like you, i was given an opportunity to something that i want to do full time and not on a on off basis.

Another consideration is to stay with the job that offers the most growth and experience. This could be a better investment than a minor increase in paycheck at another dead end.

Many years ago I worked for a corporate where I utterly despised the working conditions. I had to report to multiple General Managers, look after all end user hardware/software in all of SA, asset management, procurement, month-end statements, AD, mobility, training ... list goes on ... all on my own at a junior level. I was miserable and could not cope - I even wrote emails to the FD and IT Managers asking for at least one assistant and justifying it as best I could in my youth but they never did pursue it. Despite all that if I look at my CV now that portion of my career really looks impressive especially as a first job.

Also I will never expect a bonus or 13th paycheck from my employer though it is nice to get it. An increase on the other hand is mandatory as I understand inflation (even a minor increase could actually still be considered a decrease - which says a lot about your worth/value perceived). If I have grown and offer more value to the company then the only excuse why I should not get an increase in line or above inflation is if they are truly operating at a loss.

So I've been going for interviews, got 1 offer and they upped my salary by R1.5k, I laughed it off though it got me down and I contemplated my self worth and the quality of developer I am.

Then I contacted a recruiter that I had dealt with previously. The technical lead at a bank asked me to come in for an assessment last week Friday, I had the interview on Monday, I signed the job offer yesterday. My CTC DOUBLED, my job is now secure and I'll have my studies paid for. Life is good!

A word of advice for guys feeling down. Don't give up, you're usually worth more than what you think you are. Just persevere and add to your skillset. Set 5 year and 10 year plans out for yourself and go achieve your goals!

Thanks for your advice guys.

Slightly off topic, has anyone use another job offer as leverage for securing a raise at current employer? How did you go about this?

We have an internal sales lady here that has resigned 3 times. First was not long after she started, she stayed. Second was with the strike going on last year, she went to work at another place for 3 days and came back. Last week she resigned again, we heard yesterday that she's staying again.

I'm not sure why the boss doesn't just tell her to eff off. I'm sure that with her salary, they can appoint 4 people to do her job and still have change.

Attention maybe?
