Should I buy a HP DV6 3068 notebook?

Does anyone have one of these?

HP DV6 3068ei
Intel® Core i7-720m processor 1.6 GHz
6144MB RAM
640GB HDD
5650 gfx card
15.6" display

I was looking at one at Incredible Connection today and for the price of R11999 it seems like a great laptop, but the guys at the store were telling me that they have a bunch of returns and that it doesn't work with a usb 3g modem, but they also said "the i5 has like 6 cores so it's crazy fast", pretty much in those exact words and I had to then explain the difference between dual core and quad core and also explain to them what HyperThreading is...so I don't really trust their technical expertise all that much.
Anyone who owns one or the bigger 17" model have any feedback?
 
looks like a nice piece of kit. would run linux on it though.
 
Looks good for the price, but I don't understand how you can specify an i7 without a SSD.

I have a simple rule for shopping at IC, know exactly what you want before you walk in. The chance that their employees will actually know anything is exceedingly slim, so spare yourself the effort/frustration of asking.
 
Seems the mobile i7 CPUs don't have triple channel RAM, so if there are only two RAM slots then 2GB + 4GB is the only way to get 6GB

Do you think phoning HP support will help in finding out about this issue with usb 3g modems? Or will they just say that there is no problem?
 
Why would a 3G USB modem not work with this laptop? Where have you heard this except from IC staff?

I don't think there is any need to call HP...
 
Yeah I did try Google too, found nothing.
I dunno, I thought that maybe, just maybe the IC staff were just being nice guys by letting me know about issues...

Most probably just a 3G card which wasn't supported by win 7 out the box, quite easy to sort out, just need to download the new firmware for your 3G card and the new drivers.

Looks like a nice laptop (specs wise), any idea if it has space for a 2nd HDD, been looking for a new laptop which can.... Want to put an SSD in as my boot/applications drive
 
I had a look at the HP.com store, because it allows you to customise the laptop, and the DV6 doesn't seem to allow a second HDD, but the DV7 (17") model does.
 
Is the i7 720 going to be faster than an i5 in everything or only in situations where all 4 cores will be utilised?
 
NO NO NO Dont ever buy an HP Laptop. You will be sorry just like me.

Don't do it.

It will be a doorstopper in no time. Faulty motherboards and they don't take the blame for their shoddy hardware.

In the past I would've agreed, HP made some major **** ups on simple design issues but they've been improving recently.... that being said consider this lenovo Y560 R10463 for a similar spec'd machine at webantic or the Asus N61JQ @ R11,969 from IkonicIT

P.S- (if anyone cares, probably not...) I decided I'm gonna get a laptop with an esata port and use an external esata drive as my data and then just pop a SSD in the laptop for better performance
 
TBH I would expect a better resolution screen that the 1366x768 ones that are on those two, especially if you are doing the graphics/CAD and even dev stuff on it.

I agree and disagree, if its your only screen and your doing graphics/CAD then you should get a less powerful laptop with better graphics and buy a screen, would be more productive...

The HP has the same resolution screen...
If you want a laptop with those specs and a 1600x900 screen add on another 2k i.e.-around 13,5k-15k
Same sort of specs and a full HD screen around 4k difference from 15k upwards

So its all a matter of priority.... If he thinks he wants a better screen I'd say get drop the processor to an i5 which would then change the 1600x900 to around 9.5-11k and the FHD to 10.5-12k
