O.k so i got myself a nice MTN bike at the beginning of the year and i am really enjoying it.
I would like to set myself a goal and i would really like to enter the 94.7 Cycle race. I have never done a race before so i dont know if i will peg over and die.

Any suggestions?

Training program

First off join a club and join their weekend club rides otherwise if u have mates then u can go cycle together, consistency is what you should be aiming for as you need to build up your base mileage as well as fitness but do so gradually and the more you do it the more you will enjoy it.
also make sure that your bike is properly setup for you otherwise you will not have a comfort ride and you could encounter injuries at some point.

3months before the race sign up for a 94.7 training program - usually goes according to the time you want to achieve - for example under 4hrs, under 3hrs etc etc

Without proper training on the day you will not have a fantastic ride , you will struggle - it will be uncomfortable and painful which i'm sure you would want to avoid - that's where the training comes in:)

Njoy

Also join the forum "thehubsa.co.za" - you will get a lot of good training advice.

But just do it, cycling is great fun and watch out it is very addictive !!! (I started just over a year ago and I cannot get enough of it).

Thanks for the advice. Really looks great.
I am reallllly thinking about it. Anyone else on here going to do it?

You should definitely do it. I started doing it in 2004 and have been riding in the licensed categories each year (from junior up to elite).
It's definitely not an easy race, but if you do the right training it will be an awesome experience (iow do a lot of long tough hills, as that makes up most of the race). If you want some decent pre-racing in, go do the Telkom Satellite challenge. Hekpoort helps you prepare for the 94.7 (Hekpoort is 8-10% for around 11km in total).

Great. That makes sense. Would it be worth my while to do that on a mountain bike?

It'll be tough but yeah, sure. Just get yourself some slicks (knobblies will make it a lot harder).

Gumpie, you got a mountain bike ... hope you are planning on doing the off-road challenge on the Saturday as well. ;)

Knobblies and gearing on your MTB are going to make the main ride a bit longer but (IMHO) I haven't found the cost and effort of putting slicks on mine worth the small diffs in time/effort worth it. Rode the last 2 tears on MTB and knobblies

great advice from Froot though wrt getting in a couple of rides before the 94.7 . There are a couple of races leading up to November where you can ride "half" distances until confident enough to challenge the "100's". Don't stress too much though, as long as you spend the time in the saddle, you'll have no problem finishing.

Oh ja ... and try to get your entry in like yesterday. You're probably not going to be seeded (unless you ride the seeding races before) and your starting time will be later the longer you delay. You don't want to be starting late on a November summers day. With the odd exception you can expect some serious temperatures on the day
