I'm not really a very keen gamer, more on the casual side, like on weekends etc.

I found the Arcade version (white) for R1499 with controller.
I only have 3g at home, so i will not be on xbox live much.
And will mainly borrow or hire games.

Should i get it or stick to pc gaming?
This is the old "buggy" console is it not?

Hifi corp have the ps3 160gb for R2899
Xbox 250gb + forza 3 + alan wake for R3099

if you're not a keen gamer then rather go for the ps3.its more versatile, you can use it as a media server (e.g. stream movies from your pc to the ps3).the plus side is you get a 'free' blue-ray player with the ps3!and hey the games are not bad either :D so yeah go ps3 i'd say

C , i have an HTPC with Blu ray already and all my friends have an xbox so if I wanted to play online I can play with them.
A ps3 doesn't give me that option, plus it's missing a couple fps titles I enjoy like Halo series or gears of war?

I am on my second arcade the new ones seem fine its going on for 2 years now. Fighting games, multiplayer is where the funs at but Im still addicted to my pc, If I got the choice again I prob wouldnt buy it, as the tv is in use most of the time maybe if we had a second tv.....

Playing online with xbox live, say i wanted to play COD MW2 with a buddy in Bloem - what sort of bandwidth would it use over say an hour?

Well XBox players are also missing some exclusive titles. The only way to win is to have both PS3 and XBox.

If you're not a very keen gamer - then go with the Arcade, nothing wrong with them - just lacking on the HDD space.
But that shouldn't be an issue.
There's a thread somewhere in the CellC forum, with guys giving stats on their usage when gaming.

The arcade is not that cheap especialy since im guessing its second hand? I paid about R1700 for mine when it was new, so R1500 is a bit of a rip off
you might as well spend a little bit more on the new black one (with 4gb HDD)

Can you not "softmod" the DVD drive to play backup games?

Or do you HAVE to open the thing up and solder some device onto it.

Sites like this say:

Xbox 360 consoles are manufactured with several brands of DVD drives inside. These brands include Hitachi, Lite-On and Samsung. All brands of Xbox 360 DVD drives can be "flashed" or "softmodded" to run backup copies of games you own. You may need to softmod the DVD drive if you want to keep your original DVD games in pristine, unscratched condition. Softmodding the Xbox 360 DVD drive will take about 20 minutes.

From the sounds of it the LT+ firmware will still allow you to play inline for now anyway!

What is the most common DVD drive "make" if I had to purchase an xbox today?

I don't actually play online, no internet access as such - so it will mostly be for "every" now and again - I soft modded my first xbox.
If the games were reasonable in price then most people would not do it, but R500 - R700 is crazy, I think the multiplayer aspect is what you are paying for, if it were just single player then it might be cheaper?
